I can't tell of the craftin buddies are balanced are not. Take Blacksmith. It has two Hold actions and one Tap action. Magmia is good at Hold, while Bray and Ian are good at Tap. This means you ideally don't ever want to use Bray and Ian together, and Magmia should always be used. However, most of your crafting will be with armor and weapons. As for the primary buddy, it will almost always be Bray or Ian while Magmia is the secondary.

I guess it kind of works out well. That, along with dragging the three gatherers to grove nodes or picking the right elements of the combat lives does help to keep everyone useful.

By the time you have 3 levelled and geared crafting buddies, you should be able to reliably hit Excellents so their buffs to tap/hold don't really matter. The specialisations are more relevant which is just a stat buff indicated by the smiley icon when selecting them.
