It's never really about how you should suddenly be merciful and forgive everyone, but actually taking a second to realize what the consequences could be, and not lashing out like an animal. Nu Kratos still kills fucking everything 24/7, but there's an attempt to at least defuse situations or give someone a chance to stop once they're beaten.

Here’s the thing, they didn’t know he existed because his new dead wife Faye set up a bunch of wards hiding them. And before she died she told him to cut down specific trees to put on her pyre, the last of which we see him cutting down in the intro. Those just so happen to be the trees she put the wards on. Now imagine you’re a god and you suddenly see an extremely powerful person just pop up in your territory all of a sudden. Not to mention instead of leaving Kratos was urged by Atreus to spread her ashes at the highest peak because it was her last wish. Two things here, 1. He should not be listening to his son when it comes to shit like that. And 2. Faye being from Jotunheim which is where the highest peak is knew that and gave him purposely vague directions so he would come into contact with more gods and fight them. And the game ends up revealing there was a whole prophecy which she knew about and did everything she could to facilitate it.
