Kids are pure. Pokemon know this, and it's easy to make lifelong bonds with each other. It's probably harder to make friends with Pokemon as an adult if they can tell your intentions aren't pure.

Pokemon games are mostly made up of very idealistic societies where world hunger has ended, there's no major energy crisis or anything, and only Teams really have any evil ambitions. They even downplay the original Gen 1's mention of a war and pretend that it simply didn't happen. Most conflicts involving legendaries get solved in an afternoon. You get some basic sad stories and some crazies but most people are content to live their lives, make the world better, and don't really have greedy ambitions.
