What are zillennial/younger millennials' thoughts on the Genesis and general "pre-Spongebob" culture? Is it too dated or do you appreciate it?
Anonymous No.712609262 [Report]
The genesis was cool but the amiga was cooler. Pre-spongebob culture was Bart Simpson stickers everywhere

i was the target audience for spongebob and i found a gensis at a yard sale
the genesis was god tier and some of the spongebob gba games were designed just like a genesis game

spongebob was a smash hit but really what your thinking about is pre simpsons, south park culture

The Genesis is one of my favorite consoles. I have one in the room with me right now, and I even have a Sega CD too.
My most anticipated new game release of 2025 is even a Genesis game—Earthion, by Yuzo Koshiro's Ancient. Sadly, it was just announced today that the physical release won't actually be out until next year, but it's at least getting a release on Steam and modern consoles at the end of July.

I agree with you, but the SNES at least has Gradius III, Pop'n Twinbee, Parodius da, Jikkyou Osahberi Parodius and Super Aleste. aka Space Megaforce. And like, Darius Twin, I guess.
So, it had some really good ones, but I think you're otherwise right that the Genesis has a better spread.

I'll give you those. Even though Gradius III got neutered just so the SNES could even run it. (missing certain enemy and boss patterns) Twin was just okay, Darius didn't really come into its own until Gaiden and G, though the "wide screen" CRT mirror thing in the arcade for the first two games was way ahead of its time.
Still. Got nothing on Thunder Force III / IV, Gaiares, Grind Stormer, and MUSHA. And that's just scratching the surface of what the Genesis had to offer.
So it depends. Want more RPGs? Go with SNES. Want more arcade-ey stuff? Genesis.

For sure. The first party library on the Genesis is already enough to give it the edge over the SNES as far as arcade games are concerned, and then you’ve got stand-out ports of Ghouls ‘n Ghosts and Strider. It even has the better version of Final Fight via the Sega CD, and I personally prefer the Street Fighter II ports on there vs. those on the SNES.

But being a huge Konami shmup fan, it hurts to not see any Gradius or Parodius games on that console. Although I suppose if they were, I wouldn’t have an excuse to also own a PC Engine…

93 here. The only person I knew who had one was a severely autistic rich kid that had every console at the time. He was obsessed with Sonic too. Sega kids were just not a thing in my neck of the woods. Nintendo and Sony were just too big back then.

The combos from the arcade worked on the Genesis. They didn't work on the SNES. If you played on Arcade it was really neat to see that the Genesis would play the same. Plus no slowdown

Genesis was dated even for the time. The SNES had 256 colors and PC was just starting to get into 3D and here Sega was with less impressive sound and graphics even compared to their 1986 arcade cabinets.

I don't know what games there are on it. None of them seem to have sequels on later consoles, or entered the wider popular culture.

Genesis for Sports Games, and Arcade Genres, SNES for RPGs and non-sonic platformers.
And I have always been a RPG guy at heart.

As for the rest of "Pre-SpongeBob culture" the 90s looked like a less optimistic but also more creative version of the 80s in that being a kid who could consume fun media looed better but fi you were an adult the 80s seemed to be a better time.

Anonymous No.712618854 [Report]
>>712609176 (OP)
I have had one for a while but I've only used it for the Sonic trilogy and even emulating haven't played much outside of that. Might get an Everdrive or something when I want to play games for it. Being honest, I have gotten way more out of the SNES library than the Mega Drive's so far. Overall I have checked out some 8-bit stuff and I don't have an intrinsic aversion, but I haven't found much I cared for there either.
So I guess I wouldn't say it's that dated but I just prefer the SNES. Not really sure what you mean by pre-Spongebob culture though.

>Genesis was dated even for the time.
>not as good as PC and arcades
That comparison is just unfair, those things cost thousands of dollarydoos next to the Genesis' $190. As for other consoles, the best option at the time was the TurboGrafx 16, and it still couldn't touch the Genesis in most ways. The SNES only came out years later, so of course it was more advanced.

1992 here, do I count? I grew up in Post Soviet Russia, so we were getting the new tech with a 5-8 year delay compared to the westerners and I had a Sega Genesis (Mega Drive 2) in the early 2000s. Dragon: The Bruce Lee's Story, UMK3, Comix Zone, Taz: Escape from Mars are basically my childhood.

i love the genesis though it was the worse console of that generation. Not through lack of trying however as its a damn fine system, it just came against insane competition from nintendo. Especially in the later half of the gens life.

That being said 4th gen is still probably one of if not the best console generations ever (only challenged in my mind by the 6th gen)

I feel like there were more games back then. Isles had hundreds of them just for the sega genesis in places like Toys R Us. You look through steam, not counting unfinished or scammy schlock like rpgmaker games, there's probably far fewer altogether than a sega emulator catalogue.

Are the zoomer kids into retro games? AVGN sort of revived it for a generation of late-millenials back in like 2006. But nowadays is retro gaming one foot in the grave? Does the odd kid still pick up a NES at the local game store?

there's so much stuff being made today that there's not really the oppertunity to look back.

I do emulate old games that seem interesting but there's not point in going through the whole process of buying a console and buying the games for that console that would make me focus on certain generations of gaming.

in regards to some stuff however, if i iwatched or interacted with it as a child im probably more likely to find it fond. Back to the future, OG starwars, Indianna jones etc...

It's probably similar to how you interacted with previous generations, just with our version of the modern hell hole twist
