Problems arise if you get sued for abuse and lose. In that case you'll have to pay up a ton, but that's not alimony that's just you losing a civil trial.

I was with my girlfriend for 10 years and we lived together, shared bills responsibilities, and had a dog for 6 of those years. For all intents and purposes, we were married. She cheated on me and the moment I confronted her it's like a switch flipped and she was a completely different person.
