Do spinoffs count? Because DJ Hero was cool.
>>712624617No, unironically an ad for manchildren who don't want to feel like manchildren for buying really expensive Lego sets. "Lego is totally for adults now!"
>>712624703it has more to do with kids not playing with toys and just spending their time on smart phones. I'd imagine like 99% of legos revenue comes from millenials clinging to nostalgia.
>>712624617No, this is a reason lego barely has any original themes and is all licenseslop and 3 Billion pieces titanic and Eiffel tower decor piece sets
>>712623609 (OP)the last game they announced looks neat though
>>712623609 (OP)The Disney Castle is pretty sick
>>712623609 (OP)>broader audienceThe people who use that kind of phraseology have a fundamentally incorrect way of looking at the market that's been propagated by the MBAs who don't play videogames and are destroying the western industry.
The way to get the widest possible audience for your game isn't to try to become a pile of corporate sludge. You need to focus on making the best possible game for the people who actually like the kind of game that you're making. Isometric RPG? Make a game for isometric RPG fans, and screw people who find the genre boring, tedious, or confusing. FPS? JRPG? Immersive sim? Third person action? 4X? Same thing all the way around.
>new playersIf they're prone to liking the kind of game that you're making, they'll enjoy the game if it's good, and they won't be new players for long. If not, you were never going to hook them anyways, and that's just how it is.
>difficultyThe safest option is to have a level of difficulty and complexity that any semi-competent gamer could clear. That's the overwhelming majority of people who are potential buyers for your PC-style game.
>>712626268Seconding this
I hate whenever games feel the need to "introduce new players to the series" as if people playing the original were already filled in
I'm pretty sure Lego has been aimed at the enthusiast adult demographic for a while with how expensive those sets can be. You literally have a show about epic lego building.
>>712623609 (OP)I miss playing with a big tub of Lego and making houses in grade school (Lego at home is a middle class luxury)
Do big tubs of just generic Lego exist or is it all licensed stuff?
>>712623609 (OP)Real adult enthusiasts don't buy cookie cutter sets, they create their own canon.
>>712626591The movie pretty much opened the floodgate for that shit.
>>712623609 (OP)>>712624703>>712625041Lego is just turning into a new type of model kit company because, as the third anon said, kids aren't as much into physical toys anymore.
It's a bit odd considering how ubiquitous lego used to be- I could never get into it as a kid. Partly because both my parents were lower class turned middle class (and thus, really cheap people, I honestly thought allowances and chores for money were a concept that only existed in TV until I was like 12), but I do recall going over to a friend's house and he showed us his basement which was filled with fucking Lego. His dad had built him tables and shelves just for building and storing lego, it was weird.
But now kids exercise creativity on Minecraft or Roblox.
does "appealing to a broader audience" EVER work?

>>712626976Monster Hunter has had the same level of difficulty since Tri, and FU was only difficult because of bad hit boxes. You just got better at Monster Hunter.
>>712623609 (OP)Let's be real, if this is true is not going for a "broader audience" is literally aiming for them aiming directly at their true core audience, nowadays kids don't even play with toys anymore, and Lego gets sustained by selling overpriced thematic sets to adults/manchildren

That is, Lego hasn't been good in 20+ years.
>>712628096>offbrands nowadays are really goodFunwhole/Lumibricks, Pantasy and the like are probably better than Lego these days.

I still have my loose LEGO from being a kid, but I still like the "model kit" sets. Especially the weaboo ones. The "adults welcome" thing is funny though because Lego was always for all ages, it's a bunch of fucking pieces. It's as easy or complex as you make it. >>712643938Lego Batman is an original game with an original story, so I don't mind that. Original Lego games have had voice acting as far back as the original Lego Island on PC. What's so soulless about Lego LOTR is that they just play recorded audio clips from the movies over top of the Lego cutscenes, which completely ruins the charm. They add visual gags in the background, but having the literal movie audio playing over all of it just makes it feel so disjointed and poorly integrated. The movie adaptation games should never have done that.
>>712644757Didnt the Rambo game do the same thing, thats fucking stupid, just hire soundalikes.
>>712636204Re-do the 26% if you're gonna sperg about readibility
The problem is modern legos are too big/expensive/impressive. When you have some 500 dollar ultimate collector set, you're not inclined to ever take the set apart and use the pieces to make your own stuff, which was always the whole point of lego. So what once was a fun kids toy now just serves as overpriced model kits
Last year I bought some legos for the first time in about 20 years. When I was a young kid, like 5-10yo I was obsessed with legos, but of course they were expensive and I obviously couldn't afford to get the big impressive sets I dreamed of at the time like the star wars imperial walker or millennium falcon. So with that nostalgia in mind, I splurged on some star wars slop, Jabba's Sail Barge and Mos Eisley Cantina. I honestly did have fun building the sets. They're very impressive and I would've killed to own these back when I was 10 But afterwards it just felt empty. What was I gonna do with these? Just put them on my office shelf to collect dust? I was chasing after something that doesn't come back just because I decided to buy some toys that I was into when I was a kid.
>>712645801Not everything Lego sells is $500 collector sets. They sell plenty of cheaper sets that encourage taking them apart and building them into other things. for me its all the unique pieces they keep adding
Older lego moulded unique parts only when neccessary and tried to use them in other sets too when possible, and the rest was just repurposed, like the new lego harry potter sets having dedicated wand pieces molded just for it, which skyrockets the price of an already expensive licensed set, when normal lego sticks, like the ones they've used since 2000s, did the job more then well enough.

>>712652489I see more girls these days actually be interested in lego.
My little sister also likes it a lot, meanwhile all the boys in my family are on phones 24/7, except for my cousin who somehow got into 3d printers of all things.

>>712623609 (OP)Lego mortal kombat soon?
>>712655123Traveller's Tales actually wanted to include it in the Midway pack for Dimensions.
Every time I think about getting back into lego I just get overwhelmed by how much of a logistical pain in the ass it would be. I'm not talking about buying glorified model kits, I'm talking about wanting to build stuff on my own. It's a pain in the ass to plot out in autocad or whatever to design what you want to make and then specifically order those pieces off third party sites. But the traditional route of just having a giant tub of old lego sets to cannibalize isn't really feasible either when even small sets nowadays cost like 100 bucks a pop, and that's not necessarily an efficient way of getting the pieces you need either.
>>712650864Anon, when people say "arcade style" they aren't referring to a specific game, they're referring to the drop-in, drop-out low story style of game where you have something like 3 lives and then you're done unless you put in another quarter.
That's what MH used to be.
So much so that this
>>all drops and materials would sparkle for a minute or so and then vanish forever in a poof of smokeIs basically shiny drops minus the smoke, until of course they removed the despawn in world.
And this
>you have 50 seconds after beating a boss to pick your spoils Is every MH game since you have 60 seconds before you return to the hub.
Also,
>failure to dodge in time will result in enemies launching attacks that hit you regardless of whether they physically miss>>boss fights would be scripted and feature break gauges. failure to empty the gauge will result in eating an unavoidable attack that will blow your HP bar to pieces >when you're back to the town the game asks for another creditThese aren't arcade game things.

4 years ago I got drunk and randomly ordered this online.
When it showed up I couldn't bring myself to open it up and it's sat on the top of a cupboard ever since.
I honestly don't understand why millenials are so obsessed with toys, I mean I had tons as a kid and I keep the ones that look cool for 3D modeling reference, but buying action figures just to keep them around seems so dumb, even worse when they have kids and poor little shits just have to stare at them while they get shitty toys.

>>712683026Non yellow minifigs where a mistake
>>712623609 (OP)I will be very honest:
If you buy legos to build the set, you're a cuckold.
You are given near-infinite freedom to make whatever you want, and you choose to follow the instructions.
>>712674336Thats what marketing is. Its not just about ads, but also about the product and what costumer you can sell it to.
>>712684449If you wanted to just freebuild why would you buy a set? I'm pretty sure they sell the individual bricks and parts on their site so you can just pick what you want.
>>712684247happened to souls easily with open world slop
>>712674336>a basic Lego set is close to 100-fucking-dollarsIt's not, though. I just went to lego.com to confirm, across all themes, showing "in-stock only":
>513 sets under $25>358 sets for $25 to $50>127 sets for $50 to $75>106 sets for $75 to $100>166 sets for $100+There are more sets in the $25 to $50 range ALONE than all the sets in the $75 to $100 and $100+ ranges COMBINED. The majority of what Lego sells is under $50, you just fixate on the expensive sets because they get the most hype and attention.
>>712684449Following instructions to build sets teaches building techniques that can improve your free-building significantly.
>>712685168Are you really trying to say that:
1) open world on its own means "appealing to a larger audience" if the core gameplay is the same?
2) souls games while not necessarily open world weren't incredibly open in where you can go? Especially in Demon's where you can choose which archstone you tackle and 1 where the master key just basically lets you go anywhere from the start?
3) that souls wasn't popular before Elden Ring?
Can you name a game series that wasn't popular before they tried to appeal to a larger audience?
>>712684449You build the set, play with it, smash it and then free build with the pieces that did not get lost
>>712626647Yes but they dump so many colors in them it's impossible to make anything coherent. And it's not just the classic situation where you only had 6 colors but dozens of bricks, now the amount of piece variation has increased significantly too so you're lucky to get enough of a certain shape.
