>broader audience
The people who use that kind of phraseology have a fundamentally incorrect way of looking at the market that's been propagated by the MBAs who don't play videogames and are destroying the western industry.

The way to get the widest possible audience for your game isn't to try to become a pile of corporate sludge. You need to focus on making the best possible game for the people who actually like the kind of game that you're making. Isometric RPG? Make a game for isometric RPG fans, and screw people who find the genre boring, tedious, or confusing. FPS? JRPG? Immersive sim? Third person action? 4X? Same thing all the way around.
>new players
If they're prone to liking the kind of game that you're making, they'll enjoy the game if it's good, and they won't be new players for long. If not, you were never going to hook them anyways, and that's just how it is.
>difficulty
The safest option is to have a level of difficulty and complexity that any semi-competent gamer could clear. That's the overwhelming majority of people who are potential buyers for your PC-style game.

Lego is just turning into a new type of model kit company because, as the third anon said, kids aren't as much into physical toys anymore.
It's a bit odd considering how ubiquitous lego used to be- I could never get into it as a kid. Partly because both my parents were lower class turned middle class (and thus, really cheap people, I honestly thought allowances and chores for money were a concept that only existed in TV until I was like 12), but I do recall going over to a friend's house and he showed us his basement which was filled with fucking Lego. His dad had built him tables and shelves just for building and storing lego, it was weird.

But now kids exercise creativity on Minecraft or Roblox.

The 00s gave the illusion of it working.

In reality, people were awed by graphical advancements, and dumbed down corporate slop was the only stuff that was allowed to have a budget. As soon as people started getting presented with alternatives, they pounced on them.

It never tried to alter the core of what a Monster Hunter game is for people who might find Monster Hunter too difficult or complex.

Lego stopped being good when they decided to make custom pieces for every minor thing, completely missing the point that it's cubes that give it charm and make it work.

That is, Lego hasn't been good in 20+ years.

I still have my loose LEGO from being a kid, but I still like the "model kit" sets. Especially the weaboo ones. The "adults welcome" thing is funny though because Lego was always for all ages, it's a bunch of fucking pieces. It's as easy or complex as you make it. Kindergarteners who stick the little swords up their noses love Lego, mechanical engineers also love Lego.

Because the original themes outside of Ninjago and Friends sell like shit which is why they barely last more than a few waves. Even so there's like 7 original themes out right now so not sure how that can be considered "barely any".

Lego Batman is an original game with an original story, so I don't mind that. Original Lego games have had voice acting as far back as the original Lego Island on PC. What's so soulless about Lego LOTR is that they just play recorded audio clips from the movies over top of the Lego cutscenes, which completely ruins the charm. They add visual gags in the background, but having the literal movie audio playing over all of it just makes it feel so disjointed and poorly integrated. The movie adaptation games should never have done that.

The problem is modern legos are too big/expensive/impressive. When you have some 500 dollar ultimate collector set, you're not inclined to ever take the set apart and use the pieces to make your own stuff, which was always the whole point of lego. So what once was a fun kids toy now just serves as overpriced model kits

Last year I bought some legos for the first time in about 20 years. When I was a young kid, like 5-10yo I was obsessed with legos, but of course they were expensive and I obviously couldn't afford to get the big impressive sets I dreamed of at the time like the star wars imperial walker or millennium falcon. So with that nostalgia in mind, I splurged on some star wars slop, Jabba's Sail Barge and Mos Eisley Cantina. I honestly did have fun building the sets. They're very impressive and I would've killed to own these back when I was 10 But afterwards it just felt empty. What was I gonna do with these? Just put them on my office shelf to collect dust? I was chasing after something that doesn't come back just because I decided to buy some toys that I was into when I was a kid.

Not everything Lego sells is $500 collector sets. They sell plenty of cheaper sets that encourage taking them apart and building them into other things. Look for the Lego Creator 3-in-1 sets for a great example. Here's a couple master builders playing around with one that's literally $20: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/MmDhpm_uveI

for me its all the unique pieces they keep adding

Older lego moulded unique parts only when neccessary and tried to use them in other sets too when possible, and the rest was just repurposed, like the new lego harry potter sets having dedicated wand pieces molded just for it, which skyrockets the price of an already expensive licensed set, when normal lego sticks, like the ones they've used since 2000s, did the job more then well enough.

Made me sad to find out that the time period I grew up with lego, in the late 90s and early 2000s, was apparently when they were the least successful. I loved all the cool themes from UFOs to Johnny Thunder to Aqua Sharks to Rock Raiders, but apparently these all sold like dogshit or something and resulted in Lego switching focus entirely on more and more licensed IPs (not that I didn't enjoy those original lego star wars sets but still)

Every time I think about getting back into lego I just get overwhelmed by how much of a logistical pain in the ass it would be. I'm not talking about buying glorified model kits, I'm talking about wanting to build stuff on my own. It's a pain in the ass to plot out in autocad or whatever to design what you want to make and then specifically order those pieces off third party sites. But the traditional route of just having a giant tub of old lego sets to cannibalize isn't really feasible either when even small sets nowadays cost like 100 bucks a pop, and that's not necessarily an efficient way of getting the pieces you need either.

Anon, when people say "arcade style" they aren't referring to a specific game, they're referring to the drop-in, drop-out low story style of game where you have something like 3 lives and then you're done unless you put in another quarter.
That's what MH used to be.
So much so that this
>>all drops and materials would sparkle for a minute or so and then vanish forever in a poof of smoke
Is basically shiny drops minus the smoke, until of course they removed the despawn in world.
And this
>you have 50 seconds after beating a boss to pick your spoils
Is every MH game since you have 60 seconds before you return to the hub.
Also,
>failure to dodge in time will result in enemies launching attacks that hit you regardless of whether they physically miss
>>boss fights would be scripted and feature break gauges. failure to empty the gauge will result in eating an unavoidable attack that will blow your HP bar to pieces
>when you're back to the town the game asks for another credit

I don't really get people that buy an action figure and just stick it on a shelf. I personally prefer things like legos or nerf guns.

Part of the reason I got the Sonic sets was to combine them with hypothetical future Mario minifig sets. If the "Nintendo doesn't want Mario to hold a lightsaber" speculation is true for why they want him to stand out from the traditional sets, that is depressingly ironic that both Nintendo and Lego are missing the point of the movie.

Lego minifigs are garbage honestly. I know they're iconic or something but they're really just awful as posable figures, they can't do anything except sit and hold something. They're at a really awkward scale for building things too, like it doesn't surprise me that people fight over shit like how wide cars should be to accommodate mini-figs.

Frankly speaking, LEGO's extreme greed and absurd prices have entirely priced it out of being a children's toy. Which is disgusting and shameful, but it is what it is at this point. The embarrassing redditors have ruined it for everyone and the company will probably go the same route as Gamestop for it at some point.

I mean, the clean paintjob is mostly because I airbrushed it. Even a cheap one with a cheap compressor goes a long way. That said I'm building a 30MF Liber Knight right now and I'm going to use it's armor to practice hand painting and washes. I was going to make it pure silver but looking at it in the picture I just took maybe I'll use some gunmetal to try and make it look tarnished.
Maybe I'll even cut some notches in it too.

It works for changing up presentation and marketing, but not the core product itself. Every time this was pitched, they always ruin what makes it special, as if it was the product's fault that not everyone was into it. If you want to expand audiences, try marketing and optics first. No, you described a hypothetical arcade game where you have to put in a quarter to continue. None of what you listed meets that criteria, what you described would be like having to put in a quarter in Daytona mid-race after successfully reaching a checkpoint, or having to put in a quarter after beating level 1 of a shmup to access level 2.

I have a relative that spends thousands of dollars (maybe tens of thousands) on this shit and I can not respect him as a man as a result.
I can only blame this on his nonexistent marriage where his wife goes on extravagant trips without him rather than bearing his child.
What pitiful creatures LEGO tards are.

It's not, though. I just went to lego.com to confirm, across all themes, showing "in-stock only":
>513 sets under $25
>358 sets for $25 to $50
>127 sets for $50 to $75
>106 sets for $75 to $100
>166 sets for $100+
There are more sets in the $25 to $50 range ALONE than all the sets in the $75 to $100 and $100+ ranges COMBINED. The majority of what Lego sells is under $50, you just fixate on the expensive sets because they get the most hype and attention.

Are you really trying to say that:
1) open world on its own means "appealing to a larger audience" if the core gameplay is the same?
2) souls games while not necessarily open world weren't incredibly open in where you can go? Especially in Demon's where you can choose which archstone you tackle and 1 where the master key just basically lets you go anywhere from the start?
3) that souls wasn't popular before Elden Ring?

Can you name a game series that wasn't popular before they tried to appeal to a larger audience?

Yes but they dump so many colors in them it's impossible to make anything coherent. And it's not just the classic situation where you only had 6 colors but dozens of bricks, now the amount of piece variation has increased significantly too so you're lucky to get enough of a certain shape.

I don't like that all the Deku Tree's roots come to a point. It makes them look like tentacles that set on the ground instead of like roots that go down into the ground. He seems like a brown squid monster walking around on tentacles instead of being a tree.

I donโ€™t know why it seems to be such a rare opinion that the older sets were better by virtue of being more charming. I have literally never seen anyone express this opinion outside 4chan.

Pretty much nothing is really "iconic" anymore these days.
The yellow castle? iconic
Galaxy Explorer? iconic
Fort Legoredo? iconic
Original six Toa? iconic
the Technic Super Car? iconic
Will Farrell's spaceship, the Nike shoe, RuPaul's Drag Race, Cruella DeVille's dress, Ninjago mech or dragon 78641, the typewriter, the Queer Eye set, the Cyclops visor, the Home Alone house or the Fender Stratocaster? No one gives a shit about those to the point where you probably didn't even notice that I made some of them up.
You will never hear someone go "aw YEAH, that one..." and the most memorable ones were those that were infamous like that shitty soccer table, the Everyone is Awesome faggotry or the Technic Osprey.
