The game was changed to be about Cheryl later in development and the reveal about who she is isnโ€™t until a few hours into the game (which is why Heather is never given a last name in original materials).
Even ignoring that though, SH4 is completely set outside of town.

No, it's not.
You go through a tunnel to the nightmare versions of places in and around Silent Hill, and the nearby subway and the apartment building itself.
You teleport, it's very clear.
Cynthia is outside going into the regular subway and ends up in the nightmare version, which is down the street from the apartment.

Wow, Japanese fans are vocal about Silent Hill f and they are NOT happy. They're discontented with the change in setting to Japan and Ryushiki being the main writer. I guess they were holding out hope for a well-written scenario. There's even a petition that's garnered thousands of signatures to have the story changed. That obviously won't happen but it just shows how unhappy they are.

SH2 was not a runaway success, SH3 was made so quickly using so many of the same assets as 2 because Konami needed to recoup more money.
SH4 became a mainline entry and not a spin-off because they wanted to sell better than the previous two games, which it did not.

Alright fellas, I just bought a CRT TV and own every Silent Hill game thanks to my teenage years. And im thinking it's time to reintroduce myself to the cult.

Is Origins -> 1 -> 3 a good play order? I hate that my teenage brain didnt retain any story elements.

Origins isn't worth playing.
And SH4 is a better end to the cult storyline, as Heather destroys the cult completely in SH3, but Walter is the end result of their machinations even after they've ceased functioning.

I see.

Part of the reason I wanted to start Origins is becuase I have that on PSP and can play it at work and can knock it out in 2-3 days (night shift). Are the new story elements really that inconsequential?

I'll be playing Siren as well for F, and I actually really enjoyed 4 years ago, way more then 3.

Please, don't resort to "horror is subjective". Everyone can agree that SM doesn't do survival horror in the slightest so at best you end up with an atmospheric walking simulator with tedious chade sequences and uninspired enemy designs and the story is nothing to write about since it's just feels like a remix of SH1.

In 2, you are parked outside Silent Hill, and immediately take the forest path in to it.

Yes, but if part of the game taking place outside of Silent Hill is some kind of disqualifying factors for these retards who get all their opinions from Twin Perfect or the fucking Two Best Friends LPs 10 years ago or whatever instead of playing the fucking games like how it often appears they do, then they're actually not really Silent Hill games just like SH4 "is" because it also "never goes to Silent Hill" as is so often parroted by people who never played the game

i think what they mean to ask is why there is no connection to silent hill. Silent hill 4 if i remember it correctly had walter being in the silent hill orphanage and through silent hill powers trying to revive his mother (the room) which in turn is just a ritual to summon a demon. Now i myself am not quite sure if it was the cult who gave walter powers, silent hill, or if walter had innate powers or everything combined.

This will be forever the biggest weakness of horror games, we were blessed by tank controls and clunky controls in their early moments, but now games have to be games and they need to have the standarized control method that all games have so we have been having a lot of experiments with weird combat.

Walter performed a holy cult ritual, culminating in his suicide, and that gave him his powers.

okay . I must have mixed it up with silent hill 3 manifesting the otherworld through the demonic fetus inside heather. But we did.
We know that Alessa having psychic powers and having a bad childhood + being burned to a point that she would've died if she wasn't superhuman caused the main "problem"
thus her reincarnated self would have similar abilities, and she did
Walter for different reasons, also ended up with similar abilities
but again this is all generally within the same tri-state or even the same state within the US
Whatever the explanation for why any of this is happening in Japan is (if there is even is one) will be clunky at best and distract from whatever main story they're trying to tell

No, retard. As has been stated multiple times, you go to multiple nightmare versions of places in Silent Hill during SH4
Walter grew up in Silent Hill and was raised by the evil cult there, which raised several orphans in an attempt to replicate what they originally tried and failed to do with Alessa (and then Heather)
Heather naturally had powers, the demon fetus was an amplifier, but again the whole reason Alessa was involved in this was because she was just a psychic kid in some way and Heather at one point kills an entire building full of monsters with her mind unconsciously

Only a third of SH3 actually happens in Silent Hill, who cares?

I don't really care about this series at this point. 3 was the last truly great one and it's 21 years old. Everything to come since it was mixed at absolute best, but more often than not was complete dogshit. It's almost a Sonic level ratio of good to bad entries.
I doubt SHf is going to be related to anything else in the series beyond a general premise of being punished by a cruel God for your own inner darkness and trauma. And because Fatal Frame and Siren are dead franchises, I might check it out just to scratch my weeaboo horror itch once it's on sale.

No one knows exactly how the tie in is going to happen, but Japanese folklore has a rich history of the phenomenon called 'Spirited Away', and that is a very easy, sensible way to tie it in.

only happens in 2 out of 7
James is punished with his own guilt over whichever way he treated or mistreated Mary made manifest
Travis whatever from Origins is haunted by his childhood and mommy issues directly
Homecoming man is haunted by the fact that he killed his little brother on accident or not on accident
Downpour man is haunted by his son being murdered and/or himself having murdered his son
That's 4
meanwhile, Harry is just wanders in to all of Alessa's issues
Heather is attacked by the general creatures she summons on accident
Henry, similar to Harry just happened to be there when Walter was enacting his plans

1. After Silent Hill 3, the series isn't even set in Silent Hill anymore.
2.The title Silent Hill actually came from a direct translation of "Shizuoka," a real region in Japan. So in a way, a Japanese countryside setting would be more authentically "Silent Hill" than the Americanized versions.

Silent Hill was Americanized from the beginning
That's why it's set in America and they did a decent job having none of the characters act like autistic Japanese people, probably because they made sure to snatch up any white person they saw on the streets of Tokyo to do the voice work Clunky as it is, no one in the game ever says "Ehhhh?" in response to a statement or question, for example

You are confusing intent versus convenience.
Travis got involved not because the town targeted him, but because he was drawn in by Alessa, just as Harry was. He was not a target.
Alex too was incidental. In fact, the town was Shepherds Grove was going to shit before he even came back to it. He caused the ritual to fail, but the entity of SH wasn't targeting him, he was just the catalyst of a larger disaster.
SH2 and Downpour specifically were about the sins of the protag being acted upon.

So? You said people
>being punished by a cruel God for your own inner darkness and trauma
Only happens in 2 of the 7 games.
It happens in more than 2, maybe you're too young to know this, but that's literally a "beam me up scotty" type of meme people thought generally about Silent Hill, that it's a series about people walking into the town and being haunted by their own internal shit in the form of monsters that loosely represent having a drunk dad who hit you or whatever
And the reason people thought that is because at the time, all the bad SH games were coming out and they were all about that, and SH2 is the one that got hyperbolic fellated throughout the 2010s, and is also about that
I forgot that the same thing happens in Shattered Memories, too

I think Downpour had a lot of great ideas and heart, but executed terribly.
The idea of being able to functionally explore the town and deal with micro haints within it is great, and the high points rank with the best in the series, but the studio clearly was inexperienced, and it showed.
>>712681793
I did not say that, and I still disagree, as the people involved, outside 2 and Downpour, were incidental to the events. They had tragic pasts, yes, but their individual traumas were not the point, but a vehicle.
Shit, Shattered Memories wasn't even about Harry, but Cheryl and the world she concocted around Harry, as she didn't even know the man.
You entire argument is weak as liquid shit, and just as stinky.

I really like what they did with RE2 Remake, if you slowed it down, made monsters an even bigger threat and brought back resource management it could be a great compromise. Just no dodge button of any kind. It should also be possible to have some interesting camera angles without necessarily compromising on the camera controls, with for example cutscenes transitioning into one of those shots to draw attention and when you start moving the camera transitions back behind.

Siren has absolutely nothing in common with anything shown so far of F except for it's Japanese setting.
Have any of you actually played siren, or even watched a playthrough of siren???

I-frame dodge buttons have no place in horror games. The boss fights in SH2R are literally discount Dark Souls.

.Having something like bonfires and limited health potions would do wonders to a horror game.
I honestly thought it was ass in Clocktower 3

Wasn't silent hill some sort of "eldritch location" that is actually sentient ("the city doesn't like when you don't follow its rules") that adapts itself to be the perfect representation of the person's mental state (that little girl from 2 only saw an empty town)? It makes sense a being like that can "manifest" even away from the "real" silent hill city.

Silent Hill tackles eldritch horror, liminality, abuse, insecurity, and womanhood. all of that was addressed in the 4 games the team silent made. To truly understand the Silent Hill franchise, people must interlock all the game's story together to get its themes.

speaking of which, does anyone here remember that before team silent dismantle, they were creating Silent Hill 5? They said back then they were going to expand the mythos of the series by exploring horror in the daylight. we could have gotten a new element of phenomena that interacts with the power of the town but be also separate which becomes its own mystery. But we were denied that and we got Silent Hill: Homecoming that took those scrapes ideas for something familiar. that's also the reason why we have gotten many bad games afterwards. Because Konami made those decisions. we don't even have a basic foundation due to them not understanding the series.

Here's the video for an example of what I'm talking about.
