I watched Lain some weeks ago for the first time and it was quite shit. Basically proto millenial meta except nothing made sense at all. It's like if you tell a tech illiterate what videogames and internet are in 98-99 and he makes an anime. The only good things were the mood and style.

My issue with the anime is that for the first few episodes you just had one plot going on and somewhere during the half-way point the anime started introducing 50 plotlines and worldbuilding pieces that contributed nothing to what the anime began on. It felt extremely padded for no reason. For example, the K.I.D.S Project? What the fuck is that for? Maybe it's because the anime was forced to run for 12 episodes and the original vision didn't have enough material to last that long, hence the worldbuilding padding.
Hence I prefer the PSX version. The story here is way more concise and doesn't branch off into several places that don't happen in complete isolation away from the main plot.

I think I was like 16, but at the time I binge watched a lot of anime, pretty sure I watched it in a single day and didn't pay enough attention, although it's not very hard to follow, but maybe at the time I didn't get all of the themes. I watched it years ago so I'll probably get many details wrong, but I think the synopsis is that a crazy programmer guy wrote himself into IPv7 network protocol and then committed suicide in order to become a god. The end goal of the protocol was to connect the consciousnesses of every human being on the planet into one super-consciousness and he wanted to use Lain to achieve that goal. Lain only "exists" by modifying other people's memories as the shared consciousness starts to take over, she has no physical form. The fusion is almost done by the end, but Arisu convinces her to stop it and leave humanity as it is through the power of yuri. Lain erases herself because she has no reason to exist and can't exist if the world remains "normal." It's a pretty nice and simple story, it's just steeped in layers (heh) of schizophrenia.
