but for me no PS2/GC is kinda meh, R36S-like console with PS2/GC stable 30FPS emulation would legit be the most perfect handheld

I have one of these, the buttons are very stiff and the triggers are even more stiff and very loud. The sticks are also awful and in a terrible position ergonomically
and the SD card it comes with corrupts within days

other than that, I have no complaints. Build quality feels good, screen is good, battery lasts a good while. You might be able to get some dreamcast, but forget about PSP unless its basic stuff. N64 is unplayable..

Also portmaster is very cool, I played a chunk of Half life 1 on it. You'll want a usb c->A + wifi dongle though to use portmaster

you can fix the face buttons+dpad by loosening or unscrewing 2 screws on the pcb and snipping the plastic that connects the buttons together

The G350 is a huge improvement in every way and might be able to be found for under 10$ more afaik. But I'd look for an h700 chip device like the ones anbernic makes instead.

t. bought multiple chink handhelds unfortunately

Virtually anything can do that. There's the RG Arc if you want a Saturnesque controller without Saturn emulation at 4". If you like your pixels square for NES and SNES (and PCE) you might want the CubeXX at 1:1 aspect ratio, which can do 3x integer scaling with marginal cropping (8px each side), 3.5" screen estate for 4:3 otherwise. And finally there's the RG353PS that's vaguely shaped like a SNES controller.

What bothers me about these stupid handhelds is they always make the buttons so small. They weren't small like that on the original GB so why can't they just make them as big? There is clearly enough space that they can make them bigger but they refuse to do this. They don't even have to put it into the diamond shape if that somehow would help. They can put the top buttons parallel with the bottom ones or make a and x smaller but b and y bigger. Similar to a Sega controller.

I hate these chink devices.

They're standardized to cut costs. I got the GBA clone a few weeks ago and the size of the face buttons is refreshing, though I don't terribly mind smaller buttons. Itsy bitsy d-pad though.

My pet peeve is their refusal to use rubber membranes on start and select on mostly everything EXCEPT the entry level verticals up to recently. Feels so shit.

The tiny buttons feels so counterintuitive for such a tiny handheld though. There is a reason why they were the size they were on most of these handhelds back in the day. And keep in mind they would have been even bigger when you were a kid. People buying these things these days have grown man hands. So you get these little buttons and guys that will buy them have far bigger hands then they did as an 8 year old. Its fucking ridiculous.

This is one of the things I did not like about the Switch. Sure I could play the games just fine but I wouldn't mind them making the unit a bit bigger if it meant the face buttons can be at least just a bit bigger. Even if it was like 1.5 times bigger that would be an enormous improvement and probably even fix the damn thing.

Sure, but you can often get some of Anbernic's RG XX devices around that price on sale and they're a much better buy. They're usually closer to $50-$70, and still very much worth it, but if you're penny-pinching, wait for better sales. Or you can go for the BatleXP G350 which is an Anbernic system under a different name for some reason but cheaper, a price and performance competitor for the R36S and its clones but with better build quality and controls and such.
