It is incredible how they could make so many likeable characters in AC6 even thou we don't even see their faces.

Armored Core and Sekiro prove that FromSoftware can create minimalist stories without compromising narrative or character development. I am impressed how at the end of the game I came to care about Ayre, Walter, Iguazu, Rusty and even Snail. Unfortunately, this falls flat in Elden Ring. Melina is one of the most forgettable characters they have ever created. Their "souls" series would be much better if they put a bit more effort in the narrative and npcs.

It's still 98% gameplay, and much of the story is revealed as you play or on a quick talk after the mission. Compared to other games, there is very little exposition. The DS "story" is basically the item descriptions and the few lines the bosses say before battle.

The main issue for me is that you can't get emotionally attached to anything in DS because the characters and bosses are barely connected to the player characters. You defeat gods and demons and there is no emotional tension, because that creature means nothing to the player besides the gameplay challenge.

Midway it's clearly not going as well as she hoped and need to get serious even if it means killing you.
By the end she's so afraid and desperate she break and convince herself that you, 621, is the incarnation of the spark of war.

I haven't played AC6, but Elden Ring easily has the best NPC's out of any of the souls games. Characters are way more fleshed out and have their own little plots and schemes that operate for the most part independently of the player to enrich the world. Rather than being largely just vagabonds drawn from unseen far lands. Melina was pretty flat and cryptic, but it's clear from the DLC that she's meant to be this character shrouded in mystery.
Some stands out for me were Ranni, Ofnir, Fia, Leda, Ansbach, Diallos, Dungeater, Millicent, Blaidd, Irina, D, and Ymir

I think From realized they dropped the ball with Melina since Ayre shares a ton of similarities (bodyless, aversion to fire, character arc (if you can even call it that in Melina's case) about finding your own convictions, traveling companion that's with you at all times, threatens to fuck you up if you dare to burn everything) except Ayre is just a way more involved and memorable character, those cute waifubait moments where she talks about flowers or pretends to be ALLMIND for the lols are amazing. Also unlike Melina, who doesn't do shit until after you burn everything, Ayre puts her credits where her coral is and fights you head on

Give it another chance, it is not that complex. The only part in the game that you can really be "filtered" is at Ibis (IB-01: CEL 240) and the final bosses.
Ibis is the "Genichiro" of this game, a skill check and it is fair to give up there, but it is really worth it and possible to get there.
it is fun to try different loadouts and strategies.

You should pay more attention. Yes, the megastructure facilities are designed at mecha scale. This makes sense when mechs are ubiquitous for construction and industrial use. But everywhere you look you can see staircases, doors, computer consoles and other things at human scale that remind you of the scale of your giant robot. I am pretty sure most of them were human pilots (except for Chatty for example) but many of them basically went through reeducation programs (basically tortured) as is the case in regards to the corporation Arquebus. The overall story and lore to this game was actually quite dark and sinister. It does an effective job imo of conveying it despite the lack of any humans on screen emoting or being to put it in a funny way, faggy, to let people know oh yeah you are supposed to have this emotion for this scene here. The whole soullessness of ACVI's world ironically gave this game a ton of soul.

I've never even played the other AC games but I would have to rank this games story very high up there with the thousand games I must have played and beat at this point. I know AC1 has a pretty cool story as well and I do want to play the old games or at least some of them one day.

Yeah, after reviewing the blogpost where this gets brought up it's clear that the person who found the cut dialogue didn't realize that Millicent would've been the one referring to the Tarnished as her dearest companion. So it would've been fairly explicit that Millicent and Malenia became one and the same, but that fighting Malenia would only happen after you decide to do something to the Haligtree or Miquella's imprisoned flesh. It must've been cut very early because Miquella is in the cocoon and in Shadow he shows no indication of ever going back to Malenia. Also interesting that he speaks of an Age of Abundance in that early cut dialogue while he speaks of the Age of Compassion in the final DLC.

Frankly, we just don't know enough about the coral for me to make a decision on that. I know it's sapient in a way, but are there individuals? Or is it a hivemind? Ayre seems to be a separate entity, so is it a collection of entities? Are they like the changeling goop pool from DS9? My main is an ultra light weight with a pulse rifle and a laser on its back. That's enough, as I'm so fast that barely anything will ever hit me.
