I'm afraid to look up when that was. Growing up I knew one kid who had a Game Gear but all Nintendo consoles, and someone with a Genesis but after that nothing. Everyone had PS2s and Nintendos. When Gamecube came out I played all the Sonic shit there. Fuck them for censoring out Big the Cat.

I do remember finding out what a dreamcast was when I got a hacked Mag in PSO that was a floating dreamcast.

segafags and specially saturnfags are trying really hard to rewrite history and put the saturn in 2nd place solely because it "outsold" the N64 in Japan and because it has "hidden gems" aka arcade and weeb shit you can pretend to like to gain hardcore retro gamer points.

this thing fucking sucked. i bought had my parents buy me this instead of a nintendo 64.

don't give me a list of a bunch of obscure japanese games that they didn't have at walmart and claim that makes the console good. maybe it's ok in current year on an emulator but owning this thing as a kid was painful.

The only game I wanted to play on it was Sega Rally Championship but the disc didn't work

At least back then you had a fuckload of games to play when a generation behind. Unlike fucking today where I'm still playing games released during the PS4/Xbone's relevancy.

No one knew the Saturn existed in NA/EU anyways.

Im 26. That is the sega saturn, segas 5th generation console successor to the genesis and predecessor to the dream cast. It was popular in japan but bombed internationally, ive suspected due to publishers being afraid to publish the licensed anime games and rpgs which were often 2d and sprite based.

I didnt grow up with one though and i didnt know about it till my late teens, until then i thought they literally went from the genesis to the dreamcast

Yeah i imagine a lot of zoomers dont know about the saturn especially since gen alpha literally cant tell a ps2 from a 3 from a 4 (my personal experience, i play console games in public with friends regularly)

Kids do not know about old consoles unless their parents tell em basically

Story time. The Saturn was announced overseas as a same-day surprise launch. To compensate for their same-day release, sega massively overstocked the console to make sure that no one went to a store to buy their saturn only to find out it was sold out. Back then, there werent as many dedicated game stores and video game consoles were largely sold in generalist consumer electronics stores, which were often in malls. So sears and sharper image had these big displays of sega saturns, and they sold a fair amount of them, but it wasnt nearly all of them. And, to repeat, these werent large freestanding warehouse stores like a target or walmart, they were largely mall stores that didnt have the space for storage, and especially not for something that was a side product and not the actual cameras or house appliances that were the stores' selling points. These stores' models were built around constantly rotating stock of fad items, and when they had piles of leftover saturns that werent selling through, they started marking them down to clear inventory. Many of them never bothered ordering restock after that, and stopped offering the console.

There's also the fact that several retailers weren't told about this and had to watch their competitors make money. KB Toys went so far as to refuse to stock the Saturn or Sega games from then on.

I was a fucking weirdo early zoomer who collected old consoles and had like 3 genesises + sega cd and even I didn't get a saturn when I had the chance to (not that it was a 5 dollar thrift store buy like the other consoles it was 30 something at a Slackers)
