GTA has become such a mainstay and IV was an event with its hype and launch. The PS2 era games gained them an immense amount of goodwill. IV was them outdoing most others at open world still, plus it had all the technology and immersion. V was a big letdown to me but not to most people. Its good because its GTA, because its an open world crime game with wacky and silly characters. GTAO helps a lot too, its a big online success and that means playing with friends.

For what it's worth R* design team have a reputation for going to levels of detail other AAA studios don't especially when it comes to assets and such.
