On some aspects it was better on some it was worse.
LAN's were common and they were fun. Patching games or getting new maps for games was terrible.
Metaslaving wasn't a thing back then since esports weren't big and games weren't forcing players into competitive environments

I remember when I got a DS Lite in 2006, my first game was Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow and I was pretty impressed by the graphics. I remember thinking, holy shit 3D backgrounds just like in SOTN, we can finally have PSX like graphics on a handheld.

And that thing's battery life was 10+ hours.

While too many of the games on the Wii were casual shovelware slop, opening it up and playing Wii Sports felt really fucking crazy.

>The controller is a super clean, shiny white remote
>You can just point it at the TV to select things?
>It feels really good to imitate motions and tracks well enough

The DS felt SUPER good to use as well, as someone who was playing on the OG phat DS at school being able to do download play and have multiplayer fun with friends at lunch was CRAZY cool.

Yeah I know, like I said the console was full of shovelware. I honestly appreciated a lot of nintendos own waggle gimmicks (Galaxy was designed really well for the remote, TP was a little tacked on but I enjoyed swinging the sword at the time I played it).
The absolute avalanche of games with dogshit graphics and absolutely horrendous non-functional waggle seriously bogged the system down, and the utter baby googoogaga mode a lot of nintendos own franchises went during/after Wii era set me off of them for life.

But damn, Wii Sports and the games that WORKED on the Wii felt downright futuristic and bleeding edge, even if they were all in 480p next to their actually fucking stunning looking Xbox/PS3 gaming counterparts (Gears of War, Halo, FFXIII, MGS4)

The mid 90s to about 2007 was the golden age of gaming
>good economy for the most part
>most games became cheaper than the early 90's. Most handheld games were $30 max, console games were $50, and controllers were under $50.
>constant innovation and evolution
>constant stream of new series and original ideas
>every year felt like gaming actually progressed
>sequels, at most, would take 3 years to make and would commonly have a shit ton of bonus content
>actual fanservice in ads/games
There were down sides, but we didn't know how good we had it. The recession is a great cut off point, that awakened an era of rising costs, longer dev times, less quantity of new titles, and a graphics race that was clearly slowing down compared to the previous decade.

It generally starts in early childhood, before self-awareness is developed well enough to not only recognize that it's a major issue, but also not knowing exactly what to do. There's also the issue where hunger becomes so much stronger than normal, that it overrides good judgement. This is how binge eating followed by regret is so prevalent in the obese population. It takes over like a drug addiction.

Our food is genetically modified and the cheapest shit is the most fattening shit. Organic food is pricier than the processed shit. Most people also have office jobs, a long commute home, and vices like vidya, booze, and weed to numb the stress. Those vices lead to more eating, which furthers the cycle. If parents aren't rich, both are working jobs, so kids are either left with family or really expensive daycare. In both cases, over eating happens quite easily. Its not surprising that 40% of america is clinically obese. In fact, its surprising that its that low. In a decade, it will be over 50% easy.

Honestly, the minute PC gaming became widely accessible around the world and transitioned away from CDs/physical media because most poor countries couldn't/wouldn't import the physical copies was the first nail in the coffin. Even before horse armor, even before map packs. PC gamers abandoning physical media was wrong then and its wrong now. It has done more damage to this hobby than any feminist or Chinese studio. We had it, and we killed it ourselves.

It's the time where 3D was being figured out across many a genre but not inherently 'solved', so there was still plenty of room for exploration - for better or worse, but game output per studio wasn't a complete joke either. You'd have entire trilogies of games made for one console and they'd be substantially more different between entries. Partway through, F2P titles were getting figured out still on PC and had notoriety for P2W, full AAA games being downloadable wouldn't really be a feasible thing for most until near the end of the decade.

Beyond that, some unassorted tidbits:
>All 6th gen consoles had online play to a limited extent, internet infrastructure still varied a lot between first-world countries
>Wi-Fi technology would come into relevance in the middle of the decade, DS and PSP having it followed by 7th gen consoles supporting it in some capacity
>Mobile games were a lot more simple until smartphones took prominence by the turn of the decade, but they still had things like RPGs and platformers
>Internet culture as we know it was beginning to take form; direct references to memes and language were generally rare until later, pop culture references would vary in subtlety otherwise
>Flash games and animations on the likes of Newgrounds opened the door to amateurs who might have gained later online relevance in some manner
>It was much more difficult for indies to get onto Steam before Greenlight happened much later; Super Meat Boy was rejected multiple times before finally getting on there
>Tons of licensed video games based on films, of varying quality

I know this is cliche answer, but it's true. People don't actively surf the web anymore, they passively plug in and let the algorithm feed them "content" that's designed to grab their attention, make them feel angry, or sad, but ultimately will be forgotten within the next minute as they consume the next thing. What you end up with is something similar to watching television, but somehow worse because at least with television, you had to choose what channel to watch and what shows you wanted to be present for. Now everyone's depressed and stressed out from being online, but can't even remember why. Modern doomscrolling is the already-chewed bubblegum of entertainment, completely devoid of nutrition.

as an american, a lot of it is laziness. it takes effort to prepare meals yourself. it requires self restraint to stop eating. also, life is hard and eating food is one brief respite from it. i'd say a lot of it is still laziness and gluttony though. all the people blaming it on the food are just looking for a cop out.

You'll get lots of cope answers about how it's totally not their fault, but it is. You can make healthy food for fairly cheap. You can eat less for free. These people aren't eating vegetables that have been sabotaged to make them fat, they're drinking soda and eating chips. They're basically degenerate drug addicts. America will just get fatter as the country becomes browner and dumber, assuming the same access to food.

NES: Mario Bros and Ice Climber
SNES: Super Mario World and Sim City

Gamecube: Smash Bros Melee
Wii: Twilight Princess
Wii U: Xenoblade X

Didn't buy a switch, bought some switch games, but I just emulated the console.

He has fucking everything. NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, a fucking 3DO, Dreamcast all the way to Xbox era. One day he straight up left to join the army and his parents gave me everything. If I were to value his collection today, it would be over $10,000 worth of games and consoles.

It is a statistical fact that non-white populations in the US have a higher obesity rate. It may make you mad, but this is easily verifiable information. From that, it's easy to assume that more of them will mean a fatter country. I'm excluding Asians because they're a tiny percentage but I think they're easily the thinnest demographic in the country.

There's going to be various factors that go into the growing (fattening if you will) obesity, food is obviously going to be one of them
If I wanted to give a non-meme answer then people just spent too much time sitting on their ass in their car. The country for the most part isn't fit for walking or biking anymore so no one is getting the passive exercise attained by using your legs to get somewhere. Instead if you want to exercise, you have to dedicate a separate block of gym time, which realistically a lot of people are going to find boring especially after the initial gains slow down and fail to keep it up
There's probably also something to be said for the increase of indoor activities, computers, TVs, phones, etc. Not as much hype around some sport to do with your friends like skateboarding or something since people are just watching them their tiktoks

one undermentioned game on the wii was monster hunter tri though. the online was cool. in between missions, when you sat in the lobby with other players organizing your gear you could type to eachother using a USB keyboard. felt like a mini MMO.

consoles are pretty soulless today. i remember birthdays and christmas where i would get a console. the box was packed with a bunch of cool looking varied games. brand new IPs or really cool looking new entries of old franchises. and i didnt have to update anything or log into anything to use it. 10 minutes after opening the box everything was set up and ready to go. no updating games either no day1 patches. and i knew that no matter what console i got i was going to get a lot of cool exclusives. couldnt go wrong. everytime i got a console back then i felt like it was life changing. now a console seems like a hassle to set up- might take you an hour or two to get it working and for your game to work. and the thing probably only has 5 interesting things on it that all look the same.

its honestly bleak dude. i only recognized it in retrospect but even something as simple as the floor is more depressing. sure white glossy linoleum or whatever they had back then isnt fancy, but its a lot more warm than grey hard concrete everywhere. i had to go to a walmart with my coworkers for some stuff last year and there are camera now in the aisle at face level in the asprin aisle with a little monitor emphasizing that you are being watched the entire time. its fucking weird. and i had to buy a tent at one point and they were all locked up in glass cases as was a bunch of other shit. i know that is because of crime and shit going up but all of it adds up to be a store i just dont like being in. i also feel like they changed something with the lighting because it feels a lot more harsh than it did in the past. it has a shitty atmosphere to it.

Idk dude I recently started getting into ps2 emulation and it's honestly really good. Back then budgets were smaller and dev times were shorter so devs took more risks and had more creative liberty than they do now. GTA Vice city took a year to make and San Andreas, a game that was impossibly massive for its time, only took two years. Nowadays games take 7+ years so that causes them to take less risks and follow the game design principles of money hungry corporate stooges instead of the people with creativity.

jean are something that will never go out of style i think its just the cut of the pants and the color. i think sometime around the mid 2000s darker faded jeans and black jeans became popular. i have not seen many people wear those baggylight faded jeans since like the 2000s though.nothing wrong with them though. but i think somewhere they became a dad article of clothing like certain types of sneakers.

it was based at the time when each console was trying to be the best but they each had differing hardware. so certain games ran better or were only possible on one or the other. you are right though if its a game that can be on all 3 consoles it was kind of dumb to have it just be on one- however the console libraries back then were so vast it ended up being a non issue because with any singular console you probably had as many games as the entire console market today. maybe i am exageratting but i feel like i would be close. i am not a ps2 shill and preferred the xbox and the gamecube however that is a good example of what i mean in terms of a large library making it irrelevant if you didnt get the games on the other consoles. each console was such a bargain buying a second one didnt even matter. and they all fucking looked cool. now they all look the same like routers and apple products.

It's always the same double standard.
If a modern console launch has ports or sports shit or kiddie movie-tie in shit then it's bad, but when PS2 or Gamecube did it then it's a-okay.
That PS2 pic has 8 sport titles, 5 arcade ports, 3 Dreamcast ports and only 3 real exclusive games, none of which are big titles. It's still more exclusives than Switch 2, but we live in a reality where BoTW was a "Switch exclusive" when it was a Wii U game lol.

it probably sounds like schizobabble to most people i explain it too, but humans did not evolve under any conditions like the ones that we live in with the internet and the way it changes our lives. being plugged in and having to be aware of so much shit isnt natural, having to tailor your speech or your behavior around millions of people you have never met and will never met is not natural. being able to date and select from so many people is not natural in any way either. just shit off the top of my head but humans evolved to just basically think about their immediate world around them and whatever group they belonged to. our brains probably from a simple evolutionary level are not formed in a way to process all of this shit in a way that is healthy in anyway. especially now that the internet is something people use not just daily but constantly. once or twice a week in the past was an entirely different ballgame with periods of normalcy to keep you grounded. wish i could articulate it better but im getting sleepy.

when i think of 2004 and today, it feels like its almost been longer than 20 years because the world has changed so fucking much in what feels like every possible way. i also feel like 2000 had more in common with the 80s than 2020 has with the 2000s. just my opinion though. shit feels close to being dystopian at times now. like its not that far from becoming a bad movie.

That's because people shit on games for doing that. Asset reuse became a stain in the seventh gen and so everything had to be refreshed with every title because that's what people clearly wanted (which leads to shit like Insomniac essentially remaking NYC for Spider-Man 2 and bloating the budget by an unnecessary few hundred million).
The only major AAA company still engaging in asset reuse is Capcom really, and they get a lot of shit for it still.

i try to make every day count by trying to make my family and the people around me happy. and i try to constantly find ways to improve peoples day. i try to be grateful every day for the small things in life that i can. and i try to make the most of what i have.

but none of that can prevent me from being constantly reminded that the average quality of life has dropped dramatically in the last 20 years. coping doesnt change that. and i do appreciate the present for what it IS because 10 years from now things will probably be even worse. so i force myself to try.

having a bunch of dudebros helped keep the scales tipped in our favor, where lots of games still targeted male audiences and did not change themselves to appeal to women who are not interested in the franchise to begin with. all the problems of censoring games and everything else today did not happen because of dudebros. battle passes are more of a zoomer thing i dont think most people older than zoomers buy them in large numbers other than the occasional millennial whale.

I've noticed that since I started working it has become easier to gain weight, I was neet for nearly 15 years and that entire time I remained slim and at a normal weight for my age. But the moment I got a job and had to be out on the road all day, eating with co-workers, started packing on the pounds. It's definately the fast food, but also having access to more than just a local market definitely has changed what things I can/do eat.

So generally people like to eat until their full, sometimes it takes longer for your stomach to let you know its full, then you got items that have more calories and are less filling. Even though the calories are on the box i know most people dont realize that a serving or oreos is literally 2 COOKIES. Especially the calorie count at fast food places aren't advertised. Best advice i can give is just because you buy a big mac combo at McDonald's its best you only eat half of it

Better than what we have now. When you bought a new game it was COMPLETED. There was no update files, no dlc, or microtransactions. The fact that alot of older games are repacked in the form of collections or remasters with hardly anything new being worth a fuck nowadays says it all.

There's a reason that when people wax nostalgic about the DS they're picturing the Lite over the original DS. I can't think of any other console where a later design revision is so much more ingrained in the public consciousness; even with the GBA where the SP was generally seen as an upgrade it'll still be 50/50 at most whether they post an image of the SP or the original purple blob.

I mean, just compare them side-by-side. The Lite matches the design language of the Wii and the iPhone and everything else people associate with that sleek 2006ish era even though it came out in 2004 while the original is a Nintendium brick that looks like it comes from the late 90s or early 2000s, being handily one-up'd in cool factor by the SP which was almost a couple years old at that point.

My problem isn't really that there's only 1 big exclusive title at launch, that's pretty much every Nintendo console, they have 1 big title and a few minor ones on the side. My specific problem is that Mario Kart is just a party game, not something that gets me hyped to get the new console, I wish it would have launched with the new 3D Mario instead. Switch got it right, Wii got it right.
They could at the very least had Donkey Kong on launch but oh well a month isn't that much of a wait.

It was great. A new console (or good PC) was usually the most interesting thing in the room gaming would be a whole friend group/family thing. You didnt have one guy gaming while 5 watch and doomscroll tiktoks on their phone. The good games were really good and weren't filled with millennial cringe since we were still adolescent at the time. There are better games now but if you weren't sentient before the release of the iPhone you generally missed out we will never have that kind of time again.

PS1 was the trash console and Sony tried to keep that train rolling with the PS2 despite the uptick in dev kit prices and DVD printing costs. It's not a bad place for a console manufacturer to be, honestly; sure, low licensing costs and huge install bases means lots of shovelware but also gives opportunities for devs to take risks with sub-AA projects that end up launching new franchises or becoming hidden gems. That's why >>712729441 is right; their consoles were successful not because they were making games but giving developers such a sweet deal that they didn't bother porting their games to other consoles.

Too bad they completely screwed the pooch on the PS3 being a royal PITA for third parties in almost every aspect, making devs split their lower-cost efforts between the much more popular Xbox and the Wii. Even now after PS4's success Sony's antagonistic attitude towards smaller devs keeps it from ever reclaiming its position as a hotbed for fresh games from PC and, to a much lesser extent, the Switch.

man you really are onto something there. When we first got highspeed internet at my house i thought it was a glitch or something when the page loaded so fast. that was around 2004 or so. all the awesome creative/ cool shit to read or look at online was now super fast to load. but without much or almost any negativity like there is everywhere online today. it was mainly me looking up anime and shit, playing flash games, watching primitive youtube comedy skits, watching flash animations, and listening to all the cool music different people were making. it was so good in fact that you will probably laugh at this.

i remember thinking sometime around 2007 man life is so fun online i bet everyone would be happier if they used the internet also and learned to relax and laugh at stuff more- not be so serious. but then the internet basically only magnified all of that negative energy that people had. in retrospect i feel totally ignorant for ever thinking that the internet could improve the whole of society by exposing them to things that would make them happy.

Not sure if it was different in other parts of the world, but a lot of families I knew growing up in wealthy New England didn't start replacing their big CRTs or rear projection displays until 2008-2010, so I remember in those first few years of seventh gen the Wii tended to look better to us in native 480 over the scaled image coming out of the Xbox with that tiny-ass text.

But now I suspect that many of those TVs probably could have handled HD and our boomer parents just didn't know how to set them up properly until the LCD and plasma sets made the resolution issues more apparent.

I don't know anyone who isn't nostalgic of that era, when the internet meant going into a big white PC, usually connecting around 6 pm or so, and it was all about building communities and exploring (surfing) the web.
The internet being confined to a machine in the house made it that much more special, now we can't fucking escape it.

As soon as the internet went from "anonymous online persona" into a gay place where you have a picture of your face and all your data, it went to absolute shit.
Now I just hate the internet, the internet I loved back in the day doesn't exist anymore, there's no need to keep trying to look for it, I try to avoid it as much as possible.

No, MySpace was based. I learned html code from how insanely customizable profiles were.
But facebook replaced it and it's the mac version of social media, and then youtube went from being more like myspace to facebook and ruined itself.

Millenials were born 1980-1995. Only the tail end had Internet as children. Most were in high school by the time the Internet as we know it (the World Wide Web) became a thing and very few used it.

I'm an American born in '92 and the first time I used the Internet was in 2004 at my school. They had 8 computers in the entire building, 4 of which were for students in the library, and you had to book a time to use them for research. I didn't get Internet at home until 2007 and it was shitty 1.5mbps DSL, but still leagues better than the dial up connections some of my friends had.

look up government cheese. Reagan decided to distribute the massive amount of cheese the government had stockpiled over the past few decades. The gov used to buy ALL the excess dairy that was produced which led to all the cheese (lasts longer than other dairy products). Big dairy is an actual thing and they work with fast food companies to add more cheese to their products

you are moving the goalpost super far. someone interacting with something on an irregular basis in a computer lab is not the same thing at all as having it in the home. and having it in the home also has a totally different effect depending on the age you get it. in the context of being ''raised on the internet.'' someone who has daily internet use at 17 or 18 is totally different than someone who has had daily access to the internet since 10, or whats relevant today with people buying ipads and shit for their toddlers to use.

by age 18 a lot of millenials formed most of their opinions about the world from their in person experiences where as i would argue the majority of opinions about the world that most zoomers have are things that they have consumed online. reposting and retweeting and repeating mantras and talking points other people share. you can see this in the difference between how most millenials at 18 did not care at all about politics and zoomers at 18 are hyper opinionated about everything.

No, retard.
No one in the world put their PS2 in the fucking attic if they suddenly got an Xbox, they put them under the TV together because even 9 year olds grasped the concept of Ape Escape 2 not being playable on an xbox
"Entertainment systems" were the most common form of TV furniture everywhere since the fucking 80s, there was not a lack of space unless I guess you were poor as shit living a project tenement building or something
It was extremely common for kids in the 2000s to have multiple active consoles and also a gameboy of some kind because, as I said earlier in this thread, everything was 250 dollars at the most, there was an economic boom at the time where people were overspending (particularly on real estate, but also everything else, too) and the "middle class" of yesterday would make a zoomer commit suicide because assistant managers at a Target could still afford a 3 bedroom house payment
You have no idea what people did back then, you're either too young or you grew up in some absurd edge case

The worst part of living in the best times is losing sight of the moment and romanticizing the future, thus not truly appreciating what you had. Around that time, I used to think that things were just going to keep getting better and better, but everything became more alien instead. There was a drainage ditch behind my house that was underneath a highway overpass. We ran cables from our houses to the ditch and set up TV's and amps/music shit. Whole neighborhood would come out and our band would have "shows" there every other week. That shit was fun as fuck. We're lucky nothing caught fire or something. Good times, but also stupid times.

I was born in 2000 but between having an older brother, frugal parents, and older cousins/family friends I got to enjoy even a sample of these things and it makes me feel very fortunate. It probably doesn't make sense to anyone older because this had to have only been an incredibly short timespan where generations overlapped, but the happiest I remember my family was regularly going to a shopping strip near where we lived that had pizza hut and blockbuster on the weekends. we only got game rentals if my parents went out on a date because they were overpriced otherwise. There's a lot of little things like getting used gameboy color games in little jewelry boxes for christmas, and we used to get ps2/gamecube games for cheap from the bargain bins well into the wii/360 generation. once we moved in like 2007-8 there was a younger family near us that realistically the kids were only a year or two younger than me but I remember thinking it was fucked that they didnt have anything prior to the wii and I hated that aesthetic even though I wouldn't be able to articulate why. we got internet around 2008 too and from then on everything kind of blurs together in my brain technology wise and nothing creates as much of an impression and it comes and goes the same way. sorry if it sounds gay and retarded and like posturing, I mean it mostly that I'm happy I got a taste of these things while they were around and I had a fun childhood

I had this one in HS
It was very nice when it was new, however you have to be a little ginger with the moving parts because they will get fucked up
The whiteboard back was very useful as a student, however I remember the adhesive wearing off or ripping off the cheap coating of the particleboard it was adhered to, so it would bounce away when I actually wrote on it
So take care and don't put a lot of force when writing on it, or just really fix it up tight if you don't plan to move it to a new place or whatever

tl;dr very nice setup but it's still fake wood IKEA shit for almost $300 (without tax+tip)

yellow composited the video into a single signal, the ones with more, component separated the video into luminence and 2 color difference signals for red and blue to give you a cleaner picture closer to RGB and allowed for higher resolution and progressive scan.
this isn't always wanted though, retro games sometimes look better on the shittier composite video signal, because of the dithering blending the colors together. like the sonic waterfall as a famous example

Got my ass kicked and shit talked.
And yet. I'd love to go back to those times. cause the bullying isn't what I remember. I remember hanging out with my bros. watching early youtube videos. playing cool shit like Team Fortress 2 and watching the Dark Knight.
Going to the park with my buddies.

>Consoles are pointless without it
Modern consoles are.
The PS1 could produce mind boggling effects for much cheaper than you could get a PC to do the equivalent because it was specialized hardware I think. I was a dumb kid at at the time I just know the family PC couldn't do what our PS1 could do

>20 years from now I wouldn't be shocked if you and I look back on this era of time fondly. thinking "Why can't it be like the old days?"
Don't think so. Boomers were saying "You kids these days have it so good uphill both ways etc" whereas I pity the current generation, they are absolutely fucking screwed six ways to sunday. There is obviously a shift in the trend.
