Sure its not the best story in ff universe.
But my god is the class variety fun af.
Blue mage owns
Music is great
Characters are likable
Awesome moments
Funny gilgamesh bits

What about you /v/?

Memorable mentions are lightning returns the job system is cool. Ffx-2 again the dress sphere system is kino af and cute girls.

Just played FFXVI for the first time and I'm fucking pissed and sad.
How do you have this level of production, polish, good art, great soundtrack, fun combat, and still manage to churn out this linear, braindead, movieslop garbage?
No real gear progression. No builds. No exploration. No choice. Just hallways, cutscenes, and quicktime event boss fights.
Total waste of potential.
I genuinely hope Naoki Yoshida and every other hack behind this lose their jobs and never touch another RPG again. Fuckers turned what could’ve been GOTY into a fucking cutscene simulator.
Lazy pieces of shit. Linear design in RPGs should be a crime in 2025.

IX is my favorite, I love the whimsical story, the rewarding sidequests, the fact that every party member has a defined role in combat and that no two characters feel the same. It has a few flaws (trance, slow ATB speed even hasted), but they don't diminish how I feel about the overall package.

My favorite is FF1 for GBA. Removes the wonky early installment mechanics and makes it a proper Final Fantasy and the new 16-bit sprites are lovingly crafted, and really everything good about FF is in that first game in its rawest, most pure form. Like Demon Souls.
FF4 also has a huge spot in my heart, great characters. Big part of my childhood.
FF7 was a big part of my puberty. Aeris and Tifa were almost as big for me as Rei and Asuka.

despite trying a handful I still havent finished a FF game, the old ones filter me with basic combat and random encounters. I got real close to the end with X but I screw myself by being underleveled cause I was a retard and just cheese bosses with summons and skipped mobs until that stopped working.

FFXII is probably the best iteration of making turn based combat real-time, but also just becomes a grind. Ill finish it someday though.

FFXIV has some really great moments but also a lot of chaff from the mmo aspect ( and ironically the story gets in the way of the mmo bits)

Right now im playing XIII which feels oddly regressive gameplay wise to XII, like it would have made more sense if their release times were swapped. But I love the style and character designs

My fav is Tactics, also one of my favorite games of all time.

I played the American super Nintendo version of FF4, great characters, classic game, great soundtrack. only problem is I set down my game for like 1 year and the when I got back to it I couldn't figure out what I was doing or how to progress. but that was with the mobile 3D remake. which was ok.

6 has an amazing soundtrack. I love that game.

I've actually never played the newer final fantasies, anything after 12 I just lost interest in the franchise and the way it became all about looking like you're playing a movie. I miss turn based sprite games.

Octopath kinda reminds me of FF6, but newer. Anybody else?

It's a fun romp that rectifys mamy of XIII original's design choices. But it's also lacking in that the monster party members are largely superficial and you don't really have to engage with that system at all. And the story is even more bonkers but I guess that comes with the time travel territory.

6 is mine, and I like 8 more than 7 (and for the record I do consider 7 one of the best RPGs ever made) but objectively speaking I think 6 and 7 were both so revolutionary for their respective platforms that people will tend to prefer whichever of the two they played first.
That's why I don't get involved in retarded 6 vs 7 online arguments. I think 7 is a perfectly valid choice. I just prefer 6.

Part of what makes 6 so classic (and how big of a part is up to debate) is how much it pushed the bar on things like graphics (especially the mode 7 shit), sound, characters, and the rather dark plot especially when you consider the other SNES offerings of the time.
If you backtrack after playing some of the PS1 games that were also big leaps, it's not so impressive by those standards anymore.
The game absolutely holds its own, but that is a factor regardless.

For the same reason initial XV was at it is. The initial design was fully centered around Noctis after which they required ton of DLC to make other characters work. Even then it was too little, too late and felt like a tack-on.

I think 7's graphics get a bit too much flak. They were obviously going for a 3D model of their 2D sprites kind of style. Yeah the overworld sprites are a bit iffy at least by today's standards but the backgrounds and battle models look fine.

A lot of it boils down to presentation but despite being technically smaller in most regards 6 somehow still feels like it's bigger than most of the newer games. It wasn't that it was subtle by any means but a lot of it, especially in the world of ruin kind of gave the sense that it wanted you to find things for yourself and if you didn't than that's your loss. Newer games constantly go out of the way to explain and make sure you don't miss any detail that it just comes off as constantly noisy. 6 just had you drop into the new post apocalypse and said go. If this was a modern game it would be flooded with quest markers and journal entries. Old games just lead its world speak for itself. We mentioned it another thread the other day but when comparing 7 to it's remakes it's just so much added fanfare and spectacle.

I've played 4, 5, 14, and some of 1. Can someone here blue(mage)pill me on the class? I constantly see people talk about how much they love the class across the games, but it seems like you always need a guide open to use it to any degree of effectiveness. NEEDING to constantly have the class around or use its passive in one of the job systems games (like 5) felt antithetical to the entire point of the game. Like I'm meant to mix and match classes, but unless I'm grinding and/or have gameFAQs there's one class I can't swap around because I might maybe fight an enemy that maybe has an ability it could learn. God forbid that enemy actually uses the ability on the blue mage instead of on every other fucking party member.

Weirdly enough, I don't feel the same about summoners and bards, even though they have actual missable abilities and require you to do a bunch of obscure side stuff to make them usable instead of literally useless. I actually love those jobs.

Anyway it has fun spells, but the grind of getting them peeved me off. For me, it's the humble red mage, the best of all worlds.

Yeah FF5 is like that. FF5 specifically becomes extremely easy when you know the weaknesses of bosses. Like Odin dies to one petrify, Omega Weapon can be permastunned by Bard. You can throw rods which cost 750 each to kill the first half of bosses in 2-3hits. Every boss has a weakness to trivialize them.
