It's one of the more competent souls-clones that does plenty of its own things. But it's true that it can also be kinda rough. And the first few levels aren't exactly stellar, though the level design continues to be either good or bad.
And I'm not talking about that overmemed cathedral level, that one is actually good
Despite lacking enemy variety, combat is fun with a lot of varied abilities and builds that you can switch on the fly. You know what souls-games always struggled with? Abilities and spells. It was always awkward using these, but in Code Vein, it's fluid and the controls support it. There are also some really strung bosses, but don't know how they might feel compared to Elden Rings bosses now.
Another fun part is the story. A lot more focus on that. It looks edgy on the outside, but it's actually more of your shonen-story of defeating the badguys via the power of friendship. And I mean this in a positive way. The game can be surprisingly wholesome.
Go Shiina is a god and his soundtracks need more recognition. It's one of my favorite soundtracks of all time: bombastic, yet playful, layered, well-composed.
