I don't save up for them because games are a relatively small expenditure, but I usually wait to buy them at a discount and steam sales are when you'll see discounts for relatively new games.

I don't give out my details willy nilly, because I'm old and educated enough to know what DDR and Stasi was. If they don't actually need the details, then I'm not giving them away. And Valve doesn't need those details, they just want them because data is money. And no, they don't actually need them for tax calculation purposes despite that being the official excuse. They only need two points of verification for that, and both IP and billing address suffices.

Some years ago (pre coof, I think) many (all?) Euro countries suddenly had a mandatory phonenumber box where you fill in card details etc.

Naturally, a lot of users were less than happy with this especially because Valve has traditionally been open and upfront about stuff like this, but this change happened out of nowhere. After several months of bitching on forums, a Valve rep finally dropped the stonewalling and acknowledged that they had actually done something. The official excuse is that it's for tax calculation purposes. Except it's not, because Valve is only legally required to use 2 points of reference for that and both IP and billing address qualifies.

I remember something like that rolling out for Canadian users. You could just put whatever nonsense in the personal info boxes as long as your province was correct since it was also for tax purposes. I don't know if it's different if you pay with a credit card since I've only ever used gift cards.
