I gave Verso the weapon that lets him do another attack after using the base attack. I then upgraded his base attack to the point where it basically gives him max AP after one hit.

Then I upgraded his free shot to mark enemies and set them on fire which set them up to be decimated by Maelle who I upgraded to get bonuses from all of that.

She can do big damage and heal at the same time. I use a build that revolves around Elemental Genesis. I only swap when I'm fighting a boss that I know has a particular weakness (i.e fighting a fire boss, equip all her water skills). She's the only character who can deal extreme damage with all elements.

The game itself encourages you to cheese it with NUMBER GO UP inflationary health stats in enemies.
If you don't do it fights take like half an hour, or on some of the optional bosses like 45 minutes. I don't know about you but I think 10 minutes of parrying is sufficient proof that I've mastered a boss's bop it session.
In fact my primary problem with Expedition 33 is there seemingly no middle of the road intended way of building characters. There's sandbagging yourself to a wet noodle and basically cheese with nothing inbetween.

I think there's no doubt that the people inside the painting are living breathing conscious beings but from the perspective of Renoir/Aline/Clea they've probably painted and scrapped hundreds of worlds and don't really see them as any more important than we see ants. Renoir says there was a time where he was also stuck living his days inside a painting before his wife convinced him out. I assume a lot of painters probably eventually decide it's for the best to not get too attached to a world where you're literally a god playing with their toys.

I have not beaten it yet. So far i have not made any conscious builds either, just go around pairing the pictos which synergies are obvious. Barely raised attributes at all... like even though i´m probably around the mid/end of act 2 and close to lvl 50 i probably allocated like 30 something points to each character.

I am hopping to be Lunepilled though. I´m not really using any guide for anything, just playing everything by ear but if she is half as obvious as Sciel it probably won´t be all that hard. I mean, they are French.

Speaking of which i´m playing it in that language as i believe that´s how the devs probably imagined the game (even if they did the sync for English).

You can do that with everyone, what matters in Act 2 the most is number of hits. Lune, Monoco, and Verso have the most attacks then, which is why they outperform Maelle if they're all built optimally.
Maelle gets her ultimate weapon much earlier so you'll probably hit 9999 with her first since she'll be starting in Virtuoso stance.

I think Monoco was the only one I didn't use much. He had some very specific abilities I liked that no one else had, but some of them felt so situational that I never learned to use him like I used all the others.

Sciel was my favorite for support, but once baddies got strong enough to kill the whole team in one hit I mainly traded her for Lune for infinite revives and fire/lightning skills that could enhance every hit.

Maelle and Gustave/Verso never really left my squad.

I don't know if anyone else has made this comparison, but Act 3 of this game is like if MGSV continued after the wild fucking reveal ending and you actually got to play through Big Boss' Outer Heaven arc in Chapter 3. I'm playing through the game for the second time, this time with English VA, and I'm glad that I played through the first time in French because one of Maelle's battle lines (let's spill some ink) really gives away far too much about the world that is revealed in the end
Also, I don't know why I decided to waste my time beating this boss early instead of just coming back at a higher level, but here is the proof that I did.

The no minimap was intentional because what ends up happening is that your eyes fixate on the fucking corner of the screen and you play the game like a robot. I generally commend the decision because I'm 100% guilty of it myself. Its stupid as shit but its efficient.
Its only an issue if the map design is map, this game all you need to do is stand still and look for the light. Your path will always be lit up my prior expeditions. The path without lights are loot/hard fights. No zone is overly big either. You're supposed to take in the visuals and not play it like you're working the line.

Almost every character can be built as support or attack and I haven't had trouble with any lineup. Just use the ones whose mechanics you like or understand the best. Eventually every character can end up "broken" and do ridiculous damage.
Most people at least build Maelle since she can shit out damage with less effort than the other characters. I suppose if you want to impose a slight challenge you could place her in reserve.

I switched characters frequently without an issue. Only thing that gets annoying on hard is getting one-shot which is time-consuming when you're still learning timings. Act 1 on normal has okay balancing in my opinion, definitely go up to hard by Act 2.

If you dump statted your Vit and Def like a chad then use the Shield pictos for a buffer. One of them has you start with 3 shields and 50% health, another one gives you 2 shields when you drop below 20% or 10% I can't recall exactly. Those helped me a lot, especially combining them with Maelle and Verso's buff skills that drop them to 1HP.
Aside from that, get gud or do some more pictos/lumina optimizing for more damage.

I've run into the issue where 2 of my 3 main DPS: maelle & sciel do 2-3 hit combos at most & because of 9,999 cap the damage is lacking. verso carries me in this fight because of his multi hit attacks but he keeps dying since the paintress attacks a dozen times & she's faster than most of my characters. i'll try out your advice & buff their defense with skills & pictos to bulldoze through.

What is your team? I'm pretty sure on point I had Maelle, Verso and Sciel there for the group heal. After losing a few times I reworked my pictos/lumina a lot. I ended up taking off the Confident Fighter because I definitely needed to be able to heal to cover my mistakes. If you're using Lune, keep stacking burn and use the Burn Crit luminas and whatever other damage/chance boosters you can fit.
For Maelle, use her combo that keeps her in Virtuous Stance and get your AP economy set up so that she should have enough to use it every turn. Sciel I just used as a buff/healbot with her ability that applies Rush/Powerful/Shell to the whole team and I kept Foretell stacks built up to pull off with her group heal. With the Shield pictos and the low HP booster pictos I'd have Verso and Maelle use their skills that drops HP to 1 in order for a Virtuose/A rank boost which would then stack 5 Shields on them. I also gave them the lumina that had them immediately take a turn when their health dropped low enough, and I believe I used a lumina on Sciel that made it so she immediately would get a turn when she rez'd so I could have her group heal.

I fought the giant fucker in the first ocean area before I went to the paintress. The fight took 37 minutes. Getting the cheater picto ended up trivializing the whole monolith area, so I'm pretty sure that fight was supposed to be done in act 3

This is the first e33 thread I'm in bec I was avoiding spoilers, and I kinda finally get where the plot is going after the end of Act 2. Before that point, I absolutely didn't care about the characters - it was just "Forgive me Zanzibart" galore, making it difficult to really dig into character motivations - and it kind of still is, outside of Verso, Maelle and Mama/Papa.
I like the story (basically a modern FFT:A, with more nuance and development) but the plot is kind of stupid. The exposition is a mega lore dump at the transition of Acts 2 and 3, and there aren't enough bread crumbs to figure out what's really happening before Act 3 - it was obvious that something behind the scenes was happening, everything isn't what it seems - but the exposition was always lacking and is begging for a second playthrough to really "get".

That said - the gameplay isn't good enough to merit a second playthrough (imo). So even though I want to experience it again with all the "winks" to a knowledgeable player, I'd rather play another game instead.

I guess it has some merit as some surrealist art, and as more of a narrative with limited player involvement or mystery solving but that's not exactly the narrative or type of game I am into.

tldr: it's good, but not great and not up there with the best JRPGs
