There was a whole clan of Uchiha that got along in general with other clans and teams in the village. Sasuke would have never grown stronger if he just stayed with team 7 and fucked around like a normal ninja. Uchiha grow stronger through suffering and loss so he had to be forced to leave his friends. There's no excuse for Itachi killing his whole clan, however retards try to paint him as misunderstood. Itachi forces Sasuke down the path of revenge since a kid (and makes sure he stays there) because he believed he could put everything behind him and use his powers to rid the ninja world of it's cancers (yes, it's retarded). Considering that Sasuke being an emo fag forced everyone to get stronger and by the end they were able to stop the ayylmaos I'd say it was for the better.
