The old racing games, when realism just wasn't attainable, were so much better. Each track had to have personality because you were playing for the whole experience.
Games now are incredibly realistic, but every single track and every single car gives off the "Professional driver on a closed course" feeling and it all feels so sanitized and lifeless.

Need for speed - especially 3 - was designed to sell you the look of the bedroom poster. They were playable versions of bullshots and heavily curated videos car manufacturers put out. Need for burnout 2010 understood this, even though the game is burnout at heart.

Very high speeds but still responsive and accessible. The AI is pretty decent and doesn't rubberband too hard as well. The main draw of Burnout was its takedowns and damage physics. Slam someone into a wall or oncoming traffic and you get a quick bullet-time cut of their car smashing to bits. Additionally, you're just a susceptible to getting annihilated and when it does, it's super fast and very jarring. It gives me the same jolt you get when driving a real car and have an "OH SHIT I ALMOST DIED" moment except you know, less death and pain

In my opinion, instead of trying to invoke nostalgia of Gran Turismo 4.5, they tried to do something new and did a Gran Turismo resort island instead, fireworks and all that. Even just the idea that 99% people think GT4 is the best game in the series upsets me.
