Is this Walking Simulator worth playing? Oddly enough, I've only heard good things about it online. One comment that I remember someone on /v/ said that this game is the perfect example of the phrase "it gets good after 20 hours"

Yes. Traversal is the bulk of gameplay, it's not simply holding forward but assessing terrain and navigating.
There's nothing quite like it so it's impossible to know if you'll like it without trying.

I mean mgsv is considered by far the worst mgs because that's the only info dump in the game. That doesn't help. So you've never played any mgs outside of V? Every other mgs has tons of 40-2hr long cut scenes. Mgs4 is 8 hours of cutsxenes and 2 gameplay. People dislike V because there wasn't more.

DS is a game where youโ€™ll know if itโ€™s for you within an hour of playing. It is a bit of a slog until chapter 3, however. It doesnโ€™t โ€œtake 20 hours to get goodโ€, but after chapter 3, it gets exponentially better than it already was.

Yeah, DS is a delivery sim. the goal is getting from point A to point B with cargo that you want to deliver in either good condition or in little time, or both. The gameplay is figuring out how to effectively do that and executing those plans with the numerous tools the game puts at your disposal while also reacting to the hazards the game puts in your path.

it get goods straight away. you feel a depth of tone and themes immediately that you simply don't get in any other games of the same scale. sure the game has it faults like the side missions become tedious but on the whole, it's just fantastic. for all of his self indulgent flaws, kojima still provides you with the unique experience you are longing for.

Yes, it does. About 6 hours of in-game time is how long it takes. People will bitch at you on the radio throughout that time. Don't worry, though, once the voidout happens, you are prompted to reload your last safe (which could be literally a minute ago) and as a sanity check, the game will delete any corpses you've created when you load that save. So really, aside from the song and dance of the void out and reload, there's no hard locking, game ending aspect to killing people.

I'll never get tired of how janky the physics in Death Stranding are. I haven't actually looked at much gameplay of DS2 since I want to go in unspoiled. Did they improve on the vehicle physics at all?

>>712734085
You can skip every cutscene. You obviously still need to do the missions but the actual cutscenes themselves can be skipped. Death Stranding is INSANELY frontloaded and backloaded with cutscenes. You get like 2 hours on either end and then like 5 hours in total throughout the entire game in between, maybe even less.

No. A voidout only happens in "boss" zones. (Where BTs drag you off to when you get caught to have you fight a large BT) You get a game over if they try dragging you into a crater though. When BTs don't have a combat zone to drag you off into, a golden BT will spawn instead and that one catching you will result in a game over.

It's literally a walking simulator. That's why it's so good. It's a AAA fully developed walking simulator. It's not something else with a lot of walking, it's just a game about walking with fleshed out walking mechanics.

It depends on your taste. If you like interactive experiences, you might find this game interesting.
If you're someone who likes more complex gameplay, then there's not much there for you.
It's a walking simulator + job simulator with a completely ridiculous but entertaining story behind it. Good graphics, several celebrities in 3D with typical video game terrible facial expressions, and a very immersive and opressive atmosphere. But there's no complexity whatsoever. It's a game for casual players and/or people who enjoy interactive experiences.

It's a stupid boring longwinded vapid walking sim that fails to deliver on horror meaning gameplay or vibes. The delivery mechanics aren't gamified nearly enough and the "strand" system actually destroys what little gameplay there is to find. I don't even feel like the cool factor was used appropriately and you're fucking alone for the whole game it's insanely boring. Kojima loves this romantic moody brotherhood vibe yet there aren't little details that are as cool as learning to flick a lighter open or playing strand hacky sack if that makes sense. You don't start fires or pitch a strand tent there's no borrowing your friends strand vespa or meeting up with other players near a strand bonfire during timefall. It's fucking boring.

It's great for the "Strand" mechanics and its pretty unique gameplay loop, unfortunately it suffers from the same damn problem that MGSV has in that it has a boring repetitive mission structure and pads itself out to hell and back
I want DS2 to be amazing but it will most likely suffer from the same problem as the previous two, Kojima simply isn't good at making open world games, they should focus on making games like Ground Zeroes and PT, bite sized experiences that still felt compelling and gripping like MGS 1-3.

No, if you don't enjoy the first ~5 hours (excluding the dreadful Capital Knot cutscenes, those are bad but the game frontloads a lot of exposition there), it doesn't get appreciably better. I like it, but I think people oversell the late game as radically different.

Yes, it's a very good video game. The game immediately gets much more fun after you leave the first area, and that took me about three hours or so.

The setting is awesome. I wasn't so sure if I would like it when the game started and bombarded me with exposition, but it quickly grew on me.
The game takes a similar approach that MGSV did with its audio tapes and has boatloads of additional story stuff for you to take-in via emails and written interviews with various characters. You can't absorb it all as passively as you can in MGSV since none of it is voiced over, but I thought it was pretty enjoyable reading.
Kojima's dev team managed to make reading emails and sipping caffeine before you head out for work somehow feel fun.

death stranding is the only actual walking simulator. the so-called walking simulators people bitch about are actually art galleries. death stranding is more of a true simcade walking sim. the first area isn't bad imo, the game just opens up more once you leave it. fundamentally if you don't enjoy the first 20 hours you're not gonna enjoy the back 80

Its more like 4 hours. If the first 2 hours of cutscenes donโ€™t turn you off, and the next two hours of strangely compelling delivery gameplay doesnโ€™t peak your interest, youโ€™ll probably know by then.
I think youโ€™ll be pulled in from the moment you hear Donโ€™t be so serious, which is the very beginning.

It's a great game, but it takes a long time to get going. The first chapter is 1 hour of mostly cutscenes, and there's an extended tutorial area that may take up to 3 hours. After that the game throws you into the full open world, with tutorials sprinkled here and there.

One tip I can give you is to not stop at Chapter 3/4, because the game will unlock objects activities with story progress. If you really want to do everything, you should stop on Chapter 9, when the game gives you the last traversal options.

Don't listen to people saying it's a walking simulator. There are bikes, cars, trucks and other travel options. But yes, you'll spend most of your starting hours walking.

The dialogue is presented in a way like this is the sequel of a story, and you're supposed to know a lot about those characters already. Like Bridget being Sam's mother, the first expedition and how they all seem to know each other already (don't worry, this isn't a spoiler).

I'm replaying the DC ahead of 2. There's a cinematic prologue, a1-mission cinematic heavy Chapter 1, and the Chapter 2 opens the game up. You've got your main plot points and the basic gameplay loop and plot about 2 hours in. It might take you longer to fall in live, but the bones of the game are pretty quickly established.

Waiting for 2 is literally keeping me alive right now.

Asking /v/ if any game is probably one of the most retarded things you could ever do, doesn't matter if a single post is genuine and reads like a serious critique of the game offering it's pros and cons to you on the silver platter you requested, you are going to always get disingenuous responses for or against any particular video game. You will NEVER be able to have an honest and reasonable thread of discussion on whether a game is good or bad because /v/ isn't a hivemind so even to those who honestly liked the games or those that just generally didn't like it you will always have people posting

+ It looks great graphically
+ The map is reasonably fun to explore and many of the deliveries kind of fun.
+ It's nice to build up the roads over time and use everyone's structures and ziplines as you progress.
+ The world building and world itself isn't that bad. I think a lot of the concepts are neat. Wish we got to see a bit more of the cities and how people live, what their lives are like, etc.
+ It's pure cringe-kino. I do applaud Kojima for just making the game he wants to make because no publisher or other studio would ever let him make a game like this. Even though there's things I don't like I don't mind him doing his own vision and making his own experience that is very unique.

- Most of the dialogue and writing is exposition dump after exposition dump. I don't know if Kojima or those around him just can't write, but it's really grating that Sam, this guy who lives in this world, has been a porter for years, has to be explained over and over again to him by everyone around him in every cutscene what is going on and what they are doing. It's so insufferable.
- The writing and story in general is pretty terrible. Even stupid things like the character's names are so tryhard and just sound very dumb (Diehardman, Heartman, Fragile, Porter Bridges, etc.)
- The combat isn't very fun, and the main issue is encounters with BTs being a chore. Cutting the umbilicals and stealthing, fine, the problem is even if you go through the effort, if you move a few feet away from where the BTs were they will all just respawn so you can't just backtrack and look around for lost deliveries or items on the map since you would have to fight all the BTs again.
- The truck makes all the deliveries way too easy. There's no reason to not use a vehicle when I can literally drive one up a mountain. I didn't even need to use ziplines, I platinumed the game by just loading the truck up with 20+ deliveries at a time and going from bunker to bunker.

Which is a damn shame, I wish the walking stuff had remained more relevant throught the game. Chiral connection is binary on/off and it straight away gives you access to ALL other's shit, with the exception of roads and stuff you didn't unlock. Would be cool if it scaled so first you can only see the the ropes, ladders, then mailboxes, then vehicles, and so on.

literally just played the entire game a few months ago, I'm entitled to my opinion.

I never said it's a bad game, it is just deeply flawed and so much of the meat of the game in the story, writing, characters is just not very good. It's an interesting game and I do think on the beach will be interesting as well, I'm going to play it eventually just probably not when it comes out I don't want to spend $70 on it.

Starting story takes 3 to 4 hours to conclude itself. That means you do a thing and watch 15-30 mins of cutscenes. After that though, the game leaves you alone for so long a time, that you even start to wonder if there is still a story in there.
There is, because towards the end it will have the same thing repeat itself. Good game though. The environments are amazing to traverse. The music is also ace.

No, but hopefully they're more dynamic. Death Stranding's biggest failing is how static all the areas are. A day/night cycle is a good start, but hopefully more stuff moves too.

The whole games, but definitely the first two hours are anti-exposition. I think it's deliberately written in a way where nobody injects unnecessary info Sam would already know, and Sam doesn't ask about stuff he should know about. I don't think what BT means is explained until a random entry from Heartman you can miss
It was meant to portray Sam as anti-social, but the player is giga confused and projects that onto the PC, so when Sam has no fucking reaction to anything he comes of as mentally fucking challenged

Honestly it's really nice, since too many games fall into the trap of explaining stuff for the player when it doesn't make sense in-universe. Not explaining stuff makes if feel more real.

It lets you change the DLSS versions in games to the latest version, because DLSS is always improving, but devs don't typically update it.

It's a good game that has its potential limited and hindered by Kojima's vision of what video games are and/or what the strengths of a video game are, along with the influence of Hollywood people who look down on video games
This game doesn't respect the intelligence, patience, or agency of the player at all. Overexposure all the time, some sound/cutscene/animation that isn't necessary when performing any action, especially in the first three chapters. "Hey, you encountered enemies? Let's slow down the game and take the control away from the player. Hey, you're about to make a delivery? Here's a guy on the radio bothering you, 8 different menus that you'll try to skip as fast as possible every time, and the guy saying unnecessary things that you'll hear a billion times throughout the game". Ironically, this same overexposure ends up damaging the game even when it tries to be cinematic, for example, when interacting with the BB in the private room, you need to access 3 different menus and watch the same animation every time, which will make you try to speed up this process whenever possible, but sometimes, the BB will have a different reaction in a cutscene, and since you just want to skip the same animation you've already seen 300 times, you'll end up skipping the cutscene too and missing a moment the game really wanted you to see

I got to the second area like you said. Still dropped it. I'm not gonna walk for hours and hours to collect the resources to make roads and ziplines to make the "walking" faster and less tedious. The base activity (walking) should be fun in the first place.
Look at how Zelda TotK handled traversal in their Korok delivery mini games. I mean this is essentially what Death Stranding is. Deliver something from A to B, there are obstacles and you risk losing your package. Or even just getting Link access to previously inaccessible areas, such as some really high sky island. You are required to prepare rockets, wings, equipment so you don't freeze, food for energy to climb up. The not-knowing if you have enough resources while going on this expedition makes it suspenseful and fun. Are you going to make it? Let's use resources effectively. That is good gameplay.
Death Stranding is literally just walking. I do that already in real life, exploring real mountains and viewing real scenery.

All the combat shit was so shit. I wish it actually was just an Amazon delivery simulator the whole game.

Death stranding 2 is supposed to be more combat focused, right? I beat DS1 years ago but it was such a tedious game so im on the fence about buying DS2 day 1 but I having nothing else to play anyway

its a walking simulator in the more literal sense or rather an arcade hiking game. You have to manage weight and manage your status (hydration etc). If you dont like it after the first delivery youbjust dont like it cause that's what the game is. If i have any major criticisms is that the story seems to have been stuck at the beginning and the end because aside from the opening and the very end, theres very little plot.
