This games are overrated as fuck. But Cold steel 1 is playable, I guess. Second game falied to deliver and third one is soft reboot with insaine padding. Forth one is ugly hybrid between second and third but somehow even worse.

technically a lot of people start with cold steel 1 and you don't need to play the previous games until after CS2
however the most important thing is that the first 5 games (sky and crossbell arcs) are the best part of the series and mog the shit out of cold steel in every way
if you're really interested in CS and don't know if you want to play the whole series just play it and go back to the old games before getting to CS3.
that said, I highly recommend starting at sky and reserve my right to call you a faggot if you start at CS
