Using guides to beat games,Yes they existed You could buy them or even use internet sites like GameFAQs.

Watched a family member play and beat it.

Played it a little bit and ride nostalgia to liar city.

I can be generous and say its just false memories for some people.

Want to know how I know? because I've caught old friends lying about their achievements. I've seen people lie about the dumbest shit possible. I've experienced things with friends only to hear them retell the story years later full of bullshit.

Didn't exists outside Japan and English speaking countries.

Imagine playing a grand adventure game, an RPG or a world-builder game, and having to learn a whole new language just to get by.
That was me and my peers in Europe. Game localization started happening only towards the PS3 days, first and foremost only for children's games as well.

I beat all of those on NES when I was like 6-7 years old.
Even my now deceased grandpa beat them by himself during his retirement days.

I was already speedrunning Resident Evil 2 on PS1 at the age of 10. No one had an internet access at home back in the day.
