You wish Ranjesh. It was bad enough to have to remove a bunch of bullshit in W10 like the awful fucking built in weather bar, internet search, and built in ads and shitty apps. Now I also have built in bloat AI into the operating system? Fuck no, I'm actually moving to Linux when W10 bites the dust.

But to answer your question, I don't have to do anything when Windows 10 support ends, because I'm currently using Linux Mint Cinnamon Edition. The current version is supported until April 2029, but I'll most likely upgrade to the next major release as soon as it comes out (most likely in summer 2026 given the timing of the past few releases), because upgrades on Linux aren't a thing to be avoided at all costs like they are on Windows.

If your hardware is supported (i.e. if your hardware isn't new), Mint is fine. Like any Linux distro, you just lose access to games that block Linux users, which you obviously don't want to play if you're making an informed decision to use Linux in the first place, and then you have to deal with Windows shills pretending that you desperately want to play them.
Like this.

It's good for familiarizing yourself with linux, however it has a pretty old kernel so you may have to wait a long time if something needed for you to play new video games is lacking.

SteamOS is a thing and it's very well tailored to Steam Deck.
It's immutable tho, so you're relying on flatpak to get desktop things done and god help you if you want one flatpak to interact with another (say, VSCode and .NET or something).
Also no nVidia drivers out of the box because Deck and officially supported handhelds have AMD inside.

I didn't know it was actually possible to live under a rock. How do you avoid getting squished? Do you dig a little hole? How do you breathe down there?
>Is it the deck's os?
Yes. Steam Deck runs a fork of Arch Linux and it's called SteamOS. The Linux tab on Steam games' system requirements has been obnoxiously labelled "SteamOS + Linux" for years, since even before Steam Deck, because there was a Debian-based SteamOS used for Steam Machines before the current one.

Uh...? What have you even tried that convinced you that this can't be done? Have you considered a USB stick?
There's also at least one unofficial Windows port of Warpinator which comes with Mint, but I can't vouch for transferring files between Linux and Windows that way (although I assume it's the whole point of Warpinator being ported to Windows at all).

Works On My Machines

In fact I had to do some extra steps because my windows machine is still on 7, but its supposedly easier on 10. I don't remember the exact steps but
>Create 100gb NTFS partition on 2nd Linux SSD
>Set up file permissions through some dumb shit with Samba to work over network
>Back on 7, had to install some service I didn't know existed that makes network folder discovery possible (this was the part that cockblocked me the most)
>After spending hours realizing it was a windows service problem, undo all the ridiculous bullshit homegroups and networks changes I tried to make before
>Bookmark local IP address on Windows and the folder on Mint
wa-la, a shared folder
I wish I could remember exactly what the fuck I did because I set this up like a month in after trying linux and had no idea what worked and what didn't (I still don't)

Pic related, screenshot of the folder from 7 and mint

Also I should mention linux has NTFS support but Windows 7 (and probably 10 and 11) don't support EXT4 so that's why I used the NTFS partition.
Overall, 100gb is about enough for anything I could think to transfer between PCs and then move out of the transfer partition to where I want it to go.
Both are connected through the same router via ethernet so there might be extra network related hurdles on wifi or if you got a really funny network setup.

if you have to transfer files from one pc to another via USB stick, the USB stick will have to be unplugged and plugged back in mid-way through each transfer of a significant amount of data for some reason. I'm pretty sure it all transferred correctly when I did it. There is dedicated file transfer and file verification software that I'd probably use if I did it today.

It's fucking retarded that you can't just plug a USB cable into two different machines and transfer that way.

Most of your deranged and butthurt post isn't even worthy of a response, but for the record, Fortnite does block Linux users โ€” all of them, without checking if they're using cheats, because if sufficiently reliable cheat detection were implemented for Linux then they would just allow Linux users to play. So yes, the intent is to block cheaters but that's hardly the point. The point is that all Linux users are blocked, and so no one who willingly uses Linux is likely to be a person who gives a shit about playing in Fortnite.
>>712764727
1. "PC" stands for "personal computer", and nowhere will you find this defined as "device that runs Fortnite".
2. Technically, only Deck Verified/Playable games are advertised as working on Steam Deck, and Fortnite obviously has no such rating because it's not even on Steam.
3. The word "it's" is a contraction of "it is". The possessive form of "it" has no apostrophe.

EAC works just fine on Linux.
It just has a toggle that specifically allows or disallows Linux use. Most devs enable it, Fortnite specifically doesn't.
BattlEye and others also work on Linux just fine, steam even has compatability for it.

That is almost certainly more recent than the Verified rating's test timestamp which is 26 March 2025 per SteamDB. If the game was working on that date then Valve didn't lie. Any developer can push an update that breaks shit at any time on any operating system; that doesn't retroactively make Valve's compatibility tester a liar.

They replaced the shutdown/logout panel with a tasteful flutter round corners instead of gtk shit. They also replaced policykit password prompt with a much more tasteful one.

I think it looks good. If anything they just need to make the theme for the file manager and overall GTK theme darker to match the toolbar. It's too light grey.

I've started looking into running Linux.
Win11 is the first one I actually feel is starting to piss me off even after customizing it.
>need multiple third party software to fix it
>keeps forcing breaking updates
>not satisfied with telemetry even wants snapshots of what i'm doing to train their AI
It's frustrating because I actually like the old kernel and w32 libraries than I do dealing with linux, the driver support, the HDR working fine and wifi 7 support but i'm just not going to put up with some crony-indians treating my computer as if it theirs long-term.
Once raddebugger gets it's linux port working i'm moving my work computer over permanently.
I don't play enough modern AAA dogshit or multiplayer shooters that game support is an impediment to moving.

That's not why linux is bad. It's bad because it's unstable and full of holes due to linux fats shoehorning features into the kernel constantly. It's a poor desktop OS because it has to use halfass compatibility layers, and it's a poor server OS because they sacrifice quality for features. There's no reason to ever choose linux over Windows on the desktop or OpenBSD on a server. None.

Okay, that's fine but I didn't ask about any of that shit. Enjoy pretending that a word used by your own operating system is only for zoomers.
For the record, the reason that mkdir uses the word "directory" and the GUI uses the word "folder" is that the former is a file system concept while the latter is the name of the corresponding GUI representation. You're free to believe that only zoomers use GUIs, if that's what you meant by >>712768407, but you should know that baby boomers were the youngest people alive when the word "folder" was first used in the context of hierarchical file systems for computing.

Ever installed any chinese game with kernel anticheat? Then you should better check out your C:\\Windows\Fonts folder. They drop a file in there called mstmc.ttf, but it is not a font file at all. What makes matters worse, it is completely hidden. The only way to check for it is through powershell commands and even if you give yourself complete admin rights, you cannot see the file in the fonts folder. Why is it there? Why do these kernel anticheat chink shitters drop it there? While it is merely under 5kb and in line with font files, it is indeed not one and could possibly be just part of a bigger picture. Most likely a backdoor. It is known that people drop malware obfuscated as fonts into the font folder, so that file raises even more suspicion. Ask chatgpt or something to give you the powershell commands to look for it.

Don't fall for the lies of the Linux evangelist. Those shitty "GUI package managers" don't have what you need half of the time or have several year old versions that don't work anymore the other half of the time.
Nobody is taking care of them, because nobody is really using them. They just exists as a tool to trick people into the false believe that you won't have to use the terminal.

That's more the attitude of the people making shitty software nowadays.

Meanwhile in reality great design and great code come from the same people through experimentation and iteration from actual code.

Linux Mint is pretty idiot proof if you stay out of the terminal and just use the included software manager, the terminal is for when you know what your doing or don't mind breaking things to figure out what your doing.

if not included in the software manager for download you can find things like Discord will have a native Linux version.

it even has an update manager and if you wish you can even have automatic updates though i prefer to let it just tell me updates are available and update if i feel like it.

>valve is trying to copy Android
No? Valve just created an immutable version of Arch, which is the future of Linux. It is the only way to make Linux usable since you have about a 70% chance of any OS update bricking your system. Immutable distros create a bootable snapshot of your system before a patch so you can easily roll back in the event of a failure, which in Linux is almost always. Everyone is moving that way. Redhat too. In a few years there will not be any mainstream non-immutable distros because it just makes too much fucking sense. Unless you want to build your own and spend your entire time on the PC debugging shit.

Tech debt.
Imagine writing an OS from scratch today and making sure it works with thousands upon thousands of applications, programs, libraries and so on.
And even if you managed that, convincing users to move to your system is very difficult. It's not enough that your system is okay, or even good, it must be better than competition (which Linux can't ever be because it's Linux).
Maybe quantum computers will have such a different architecture that you'll have to rewrite everything from scratch.

>BECAUSE THERE ARE TONS OF CUSTOMERS USING THESE
That's true. Consider that whenever you upgrade you don't just burn your previous machine in the pit. You may use it at your parents house, or bring it to your buddy if you're doing LAN parties together or what else, especially if that's a laptop, then you can bring it on vacation and so on.
My current main PC was bought last year, I have an old pc with intel 6700 + 1660 ti at other place and a laptop with gtx1650 and I'm still using all of them sometimes. And if not me then maybe some other member of my family or a friend. For a long ass time, until a year or two ago I had old pc with win 7 installed at my parents house and used it too.

I will remain on Windows 10 21H4 or whatever for the time being. I didn't initially install LTSC on this PC, so I'm a bit screwed there. Reinstalling an OS would be a nightmare because I'm a producer/mixer with 600+ VST .dll plugins I'd have to reinstall into Ableton.

>The Long-Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) is designed for Windows 10 devices and use cases where the key requirement is that functionality and features donโ€™t change over time. Examples include medical systems (such as those used for MRI and CAT scans), industrial process controllers, and air traffic control devices. These devices share characteristics of embedded systems: they are typically designed for a specific purpose and are developed, tested, and certified before use. They are treated as a whole system and are, therefore, commonly โ€œupgradedโ€ by building and validating a new system, turning off the old device, and replacing it with the new, certified device.

Emulators, aside from Xbox are generally equivalent or better on Linux.
So long as games don't have anticheat, things generally just work nowadays. The ones that don't "just work" don't require extremely complicated tinkering; anybody who was around during Windows 98 should manage.
Denuvo generally works if you're a legal owner of the game. Denuvo cracks are iffy due to some of them exploiting undocumented behavior.
That said, would I personally recommend it? No. You windowsfaggots will never be satisfied with Linux without turning it into shitware that's identical to Windows. So please don't install Linux. Stop ruining my OS with freedesktop and lennart pottering style garbage dependencies. Stay in your containment.

If you had it installed before they cut off support, you can keep using it and it just wont ever update. I dunno if you can download the current steam client on a fresh 7 install and it'll install an old version for you.

Nothing really
Some of the store features don't work like video playback is broken most of the time. Otherwise it just feels like how steam has always been for the last few years after they killed -vgui

It'll be much harder for Windows 10 because mechanically, 10 and 11 are the same. They would have to start actively blacklisting Windows 10 unlike with 7 where they moved to a new GUI and killed vgui.
