It's just a very boring way to design an enemy in a game where most enemies give you a fair amount of freedom in how to approach them.
You counter their attack, quick swap between a bunch of weapons, either you instantly murder him or repeat. If you try to do LITERALLY ANYTHING ELSE he will be like "lol blocked".
Any time he appears in a group you have to stop what you're doing and deal with him separately. After the first couple times you fight him it's not hard at all, just vaguely annoying.

Every enemy has gives the player a lot of freedom to determine their approach, but pretty much all of them have an optimal strategy that most players will adopt towards them.
The marauder just forces the player to only use the "optimal" fastest way to kill them every time. Having an enemy that requires you to focus it when present in the arena isn't bad design imo. I could have maybe been done better, but Its pretty good as is.

If I recall, you used to be able to cheese him with grenades, but an update made him block those so you have to do the super-shotty/gauss cannon hotswap combo. Which isn't hard to do, but still, that's one less option on the table.

Optimal is not the same as mandatory. In a game with so many moving parts there are going to be situations where you're not playing perfectly optimally or have to adapt to some situation. There's dynamism there. That's not the case with enemies that have only a single strategy - you have to break your flow and focus on executing that one strategy. It's a very shallow way to design a game.
Sure having high-priority enemies is good but there's a thousand different ways to handle that. Some of which are already in Eternal.

Even if you're not doing the combo, it's simply a matter of maintaining mid distance and shooting when his eyes flash. He'll slow you down, but he's not that bad. If you are doing the combo, though, he dies quick as anyone else on the field.

After that happened with the bfg I didn't want to potentially piss away a swing with that & have it be wasted but I always wondered.
They spend a whole level hyping that thing up as the ultimate weapon & you can't even use it on him but he will poke him in face with the arm blade to glory kill him, thats so fucking dumb. Glad I didn't try.

Although I did 100% get filtered by the slayer gate that has one spawn the the buff ghost thing already in him to the point I quit and never finished the DLCs. It wasn't bullshit, I just realized I had met the point where I was not good enough at an encounter to beat it and repeated trying was not teaching me to be better.

I think they overdid it, but the whole purpose of the platforming is to give you a break between encounters so you don't get exhausted just shooting all the time. Especially because the encounters at higher difficulties are pretty exhausting if you're at my skill level.
I didn't find any of the parkour sections particularly difficult either. One or two are annoying, especially if they involve wall climbing. It was mostly the constantly checking the minimap for collectibles that drove me crazy. If the secrets are actually secrets I'll search for them but not get very sidetracked. But put them on the map and I will spend hours figuring out how to get every one, on every run.

I understand the purpose I simply don't like it, they could've made shorter levels like 2016 instead of forcing something thats not fun into the game to pad the length. That was further exacerbated by the nonstop glitches in my playthrough, cutscenes not triggering is bad enough but having to do boring platforming over & over really made me hate it. The game randomly deciding doomguy is a retard who can't grab ledges causing him to do the ledge grab animation & just fall anyway & start the whole fucking thing over again was just... *chef's kiss*
I don't think I've ever played a game that oscillated between amazing & rage inducing to this degree before.

I forgot to mention, I just skipped this in 2016 & eternal, if I saw something organically I'd do it but outside that I never checked the map. I barely missed anything that mattered in 2016 & eternal it really didn't matter at all that I missed upgrades since ammo upgrades are basically pointless past the first one.
