Why does this game that predates vulkan need to spend an hour processing vulkan shaders. Why is playing video games in 2025 so fucking shitty and unbearable.

you're playing it on linux right? you can skip it if you're running a distro released in the last 3 years iirc.

Vulkan generally makes old games run better, but shaders are an issue, sometimes.

The shaders are compiled on the cpu. Many people still use old slow quad cores.
Stop drinking for a week and you can afford a Ryzen.

Some time ago Steam would download about 2 GB worth of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen shaders on a daily basis for me, sometimes even multiple times a day. The shader cache for that game is currently nearly 8 GB in size.
Does anyone know if switching Proton versions/prefixes cause shader cache invalidation?

>Why does this game that predates vulkan need to spend an hour processing vulkan shaders
-because that's better than it happening during gameplay and causing shader comp stutter
-because modern devs auto generate shaders for every material and don't keep the shader count down.
