5 and Tactics are really good for party customization. If you like Tactics, check out Tactics Advance and Tactics Advance 2. You didn't pay enough attention. Vaan isn't a random NPC, he's the backup Dynast-King should Ashe refuse the Occuria. That's why they keep showing him the images of Reks the same way they show Rassler to Ashe. He was sent to go get the sun cryst on purpose.

I'd play the originals emulated.

10 is good but there are some signs of nu-FF. It's a big corridor, no world map exploring, music is bit step down from Uematsu era. But it's absolutely good story, battle and level up mechanics, customizable equipment, wonderful world and characters. It was first FF with voice acting making it more cinemaric experience.

FFX-2 has good battle and job system but the story and characters are cringe and over half of the game is pure "Dad walks in" scenes of japanese humor with FF meeting Barbie/Totally Spies

Difficult in a bad way, and buggy in a way that a lot of stuff doesn't even work (FF2 especially, insanely buggy, lots of spells don't work)

Zidane can't really remember his birth but outside of that he's a well adjusted guy because he deals with that before the game starts. He's the one dolling out life advice to Vivi and Garnet because he's got his shit figured out. If you're gonna call him mentally ill for the incident on Terra then you've gotta apply the same to Clive after he schizes out and convinces himself that he's not Ifrit and not responsible for killing a bunch of Rosarian soldiers. I'm going through 3 right now and it's better than 2 but I'm not really feeling it. I just finished the fire dungeon near the dwarves but I don't really like how I had to build specifically around the boss because he wrecked my shit with my normal team composition. I also feel like it regressed in terms of story compared to 2 where it was generic and even tedious that you had to go back to the starting town to talk to princess again for the 5th time, but it at least felt like shit was happening.

If you play vanilla 75cap (the game's peak) its a slow but very worthwhile grind.

era was my favorite but its a smaller community, better if you're busy in RL cuz FFXI is the kind of game that you normally need minimum 6 hours of uninterrupted free time to have any time to play.
there are/were some other servers but a few have died and I'm not up to date with any new ones.

My advice is pick whatever one appeals to you, but go with one that's been around at least 5-10+ years. FFXI private servers arent quite as bad as Ragnarok ones, but new ones are pretty known for dying a year or two in out of the blue over some retarded drama.
