I prefer grouping with randoms than grouping an established group. I tanked for a top ranked guild for years and I'm ashamed to say, it took me years to realize I hated it and it's just not fun. I just liked being at the top of my server. I always had more fun leveling alts in off-hours between raid lockouts because I wasn't associated with my guild during those times.
And that kind of experience is really bad for Hardcore WoW. Grouping with randoms usually just means death. And I really didn't want to go back to established groups.

I got the hang of it pretty quickly. but I got sick of people constantly whispering me "you should do this, do that, do it this way" and then also people wanting you all the time, I just don't like that kind of attention.

Tanking is easy if DPS aren't mouth breathing retards, which they typically are. All they have to do is wait a couple seconds each pull for the tank to establish threat, but they never do. They either pull the pack themselves or instantly start pumping or aoeing or each dps focuses on completely different targets and they run away from you when they get aggro.
Tanking feels like you're playing a retard handler taking your group of retards out for a nice trip but they constantly fuck it up and you just want to turn the car around and go back home.
The problem is DPS are either ESL room temp IQ retards who don't understand basic mechanics in a 20+ year old video game or never once raided where they're forced to learn threat is a mechanic.

I like tanking but WoW always had this problem where you need a lot less tanks for end game shit than you need DPS. Since tanks tend to be more important than a ransom DPS it's always a pain in the ass to find a spot for raiding, or you're forced to DPS. That shit's gay. FFXIV had a better balance in that regard, the amount of required tanks was consistent across regular dungeons and endgame shit. Sure you had those big raids that didn't really need that many tanks but since that shit was braindead easy anyway it didn't matter.

What was considered acceptable in Vanilla/BC for tanking would get you flamed to hell and back in Retail/Classic. Back in the day so long as you were in the right stance, had sunder armor bound, and had some okay gear you could generally get away with it, minus the harder heroics or whatever; now if you're not chain-pulling non-stop and executing every single skip perfectly 99% of the time this doesn't work and you waste more time than the skip saves you'll get flamed or vote-kicked.
I remember doing normal MGT in BC with a supremely undergeared, but otherwise competent, tank. We took things slow and were more cautious than we would normally be, but cleared everything perfectly despite it taking a much longer time. The group was so chill we then immediately decided to run the Heroic to gear the tank up, and again it went totally fine and the guy got a bunch of upgrades. I remember this much more than the thousand speedclears I did with optimal tanks, and it probably was more enjoyable too.

Never had any issues tanking back when I played WoW. People loved me, I always got people whispering me asking me to tank for them. Any runs I started got filled instantly. Even if I did make a mistake people would be quick to defend me and blame someone else even if I was entirely at fault.
