The magic it had has been diluted overtime because it is so regurgitated, I'd argue.

It was just one interesting PS2 game in a sea of interesting PS2 games and I think it's "flaws" heavily contribute to the "PS2 vibe", of it all. Playing it somewhere else is like playing Ridge Racer V or Silent Hill 2 somewhere else, it just ain't right.

The PS3 remaster glossed it up a bit and made it more difficult ironically. The the remake came out, brand new game with all the high budget bells and whistles of a "tentpole title".

It isn't just one interesting PS2 game anymore it's something with "a legacy".

I don't think Dormin is meant to be evil at all. I think he's a neutral God of nature, but he was sealed off because people were afraid of his appearance and started interpreting him wrongly. Like his design and what Wonder's clan says about him is meant to contrast with what he actually is.

Once he was sealed off, the forbidden land became a wasteland without any life in it. His chamber (that generates light) turns out to be a beautiful and lively garden at the end of the game, once Mono gets to it. When Wonder brings Dormin back and fuses with him, life starts coming back to the Forbidden Land with new animals and plants. Dormin's voice is both male and female, symbolizing the motive of Adam and Eve in Eden. Etc. Etc.
