Mitsoda's firing killed my hope for the game being good. Mitsoda was the one who fucked it all up, though. He wanted whole game to be member berries tier garbage and stalled things long enough to piss off investors, because Hardsuit Labs didn't show anything interesting besides promises. He didn't exceed promises, it's simple as that.
It's one thing when you delay project because of some problems, but when you drag it on for long enough, and you don't have anything to show at all and leave people unimpressed with how bad your work is, you bet your ass that your project will get canned and you'll be booted out with a black mark in your bio.

I'm just convinced that the Chinese Room version looks so much worse and I'm not exactly praising their scrapped game at the same time. It's just what i would PREFER in what I'm seeing. Paradox eroded trust regardless when they said 'VTMB was a competently good game by '2004 standards'. One of the more interesting post-mortems is gonna be what was changed between Jan 2024 and the final version we're getting. If you read between the lines, it sounds like some significant changes were made. We know some of them. Fabien was rewritten. He's still a voice in your head, but he's now a Malkavian detective, not some thinblood. Apparently Fabien is unreliable because he often says things that very obviously are not true. This makes his advice potentially dangerous. It appears that between Jan 2024 and now, they decided to reintegrate guns into the game, and did a kind of Superhot thing where you use the gun until it runs out of ammo, then throw it at people. Which could be good. Also, when they showed the game in Jan 2024, none of the open world systems or crowd systems or anything from the hubs was working. We know this because the June 2024 dev diary mentions they had finally integrated the middleware needed for crowds. The big question is what changes were natural evolution and what changes were "This idea is fucking stupid, scrap it."

They're using some of Schaffer's music still, but overall it's a very noir soundtrack. A lot of cello, a lot of piano, very morose. Less goth club, more Max Payne.
