I used to play Enter The Gecko a lot when I was a kid, and I vividly remembered that when walking into new areas where a bunch of stuff comes into view, the FPS would drop and the game would look like it slowed down for a moment, or if there was a lot happening at once on screen.

Check these timestamps out on the steam page trailers.

I remember really trying once but it requires way too many times replaying levels.
It should have been just a straight forward level progression with a secret ending locked behind getting all the remotes.

I could be misremembering though, I was like 11 when I tried beating gex 1 and I'm 32 now, maybe you don't need to get basically every remote to beat the game normally, but that's what I remember.

Gex is an 8/10 and Gex 2 and 3 are 7/10. They're all solid platformers and Gex's dialog is only obnoxious as shit on the 64 Versions where they had to remove half of it.
Meanwhile, Bubsy's best game (the first one) is like a 4/10 at BEST, and every other game after that gets progressively shittier. His voice is obnoxious and his quips are small in number and repeat often because the fucking SNES couldn't handle a voiced character for shit.

Again, if you think Gex and Bubsy are even remotely comparable, I'm convinced you have played neither.

Gex jumped ship from the 3DO and went to have a bunch of follow-ups, so there was definitely something there to draw people. And as a fan of Gex since first grade, while the games aren't spectacular or high-quality, I will say in hindsight, Gex never had a game on par with Sonic 2006 or Bomberman Act Zero. At worst, Gex got a handful of underwhelming ports (N64). But the series never had a real stinker and concluded before it could. It also did around fifteen million overall, Enter the Gecko really being the game that put the series on the map from just a one-off title being ported to other platforms.

The gameplay is serviceable enough but the character and concept was appealing enough to carry the 3D games. The music is really good too.

That was a notoriously bad port made in ten weeks. The only thing that's good about it is the fact that they recorded the whole soundtrack with real instruments for the first time. Everything else is pretty fucking rancid, even down to the controls, because the controller didn't have enough buttons.
