For at least 90s kids, Luigi had a sort of "forbidden" appeal since he had a 14-year dry spell between SMW and SM64DS where he was exclusively spinoff fodder and didn't appear in any of the mainline Super Mario games during that timespan, for no good reason that players could discern.
