The series is honestly a bit all over the place on it's stance with the aesop of life.
So the series is always preachy about keeping the cyclical balance of runes in check and not overusing it. Things come and go, everything will eventually meet its end and then start anew etc etc. All that good moderation and harmony shit.

But then RF2 is about postponing the regularly scheduled end of everything because people don't want to die yet an RF4 is all about forcefully putting Venti on life support. Mind you, it's not like she was being killed or anything. It was just her natural time coming to an end. That's a really stupid thing to get hung up on because 4's intro literally spells out that the townspeople mistook you for the royal delegate that was supposed to come. They had the precedent to trust you and give you a nice place because they thought you were someone else.
Meanwhile, 3 has you as a hobo they found on the side of the road and for no real reason, they give you the nicest house in the game that's literally also the cornerstone cultural artifact/main tourist attraction of their town. They decided to entrust such an important spot to someone they literally found on the road. This just makes the townspeople seem like a bunch of mouthbreathing retards.

The vast majority of "options" you speak of were just choosing what color of elemental projectile you wanted, most of which really just operated the same way.

All the previous game's combat were stat checks where you eat enemy attacks with your face and hope that you don't get OHKO'd. (while expecting to OHKO or at least stunlock the enemy in return). There are no real options for defense other than hoping that you don't get hit by the clunky hitboxes and if you do, you have enough HP and defense to stay alive and munch on a healing item. In this game, combat is still simple, but is now fluid enough to actually implement proper movement and dodging. You can now reliably beat opponents with much higher levels than you while having shittier stats and equipment long as you're taking advantage of stuns and perfect dodges. Player skill is now an actual factor in combat.

The fun in the "combat" in the earlier games is completely wrecking your opponents with the weapons of mass destruction you made with the crafting autism and the big numbers make your dick go hard thrill. Areas in the earlier games are essentially just claustrophobic rooms so all fights boil down to a bashfest of bigger numbers and AoE magic/skills until either you or your opponents are dead. Combat in GoA is much smoother and has a nicer flow. It's not gonna win any ARPG design contests, but there's a proper tempo to it now.

The longer I play the more I agree. At this point I'm playing for my actual wife Ulalaka but Farming/basebuilding is a chore to set up and the rest of the game unironically feels like im doing genshin dailies. The characters and the desire to nut are pretty much the only thing keeping me playing.
The farming in particular is strange to me because they took every effort to minimize how much you need to do there, yet it feels like more of a chore than it ever was in the previous games. I don't think teleporting between 4 towns helps it.
