I played Atelier Ryza and I kinda enjoyed the artstyle, but progression and alchemy were so convoluted I gave up somewhere in between running through all areas many times in a row for an hour trying to find how to progress further and failing to comprehend countless youtube tutorials on how alchemy works. Idk if I was in wrong mood, or if others also feel the same about this. Maybe I'll give it a try again.

Yeah, instead of normal equip like in many RPGs there are 5 kinds of artifacts with randomized stats while normal equip is fixed. And instead of many skills for few characters, there are many characters with few skills and you're expected to build many teams with them, depending on how individual skills of those characters interact with each other. This is an interesting set of alternative mechanics and it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with gacha, but it sure was most likely inspired by gacha in the first place. I played a free indie pixelart 3d shooter recently called "Lycanthorn II - Rain of Beasts", they also have 4 characters with individual different weapons and skills instead of 1 character with multiple weapons and multiple skills. It's kinda the same idea completely outside of gacha universe.

Was Ryza your first Atelier game? It's my first time seeing someone have your experience with the Ryza series.

Maybe just the wrong mindset. The atelier games are different from other JRPGs. If you're not enjoying the crafting or unable to learn it, then it'll be a painful experience throughout, especially for the older games. Shouldn't take that long to understand Ryza's crafting system enough to do basic story stuff though
