EDF 4 dub was good. And then 5 and 6 were way worse. I don't give a shit about dubs but I have friends that do and I'm pretty sure 5/6's dub impacted their experience negatively.

Because the Japanese devs don't actually hire voice actors, they hire one of a handful of dogshit localizer firms who are the ones who bring in the garbage heap dub VAs who are associated with them. That's why you get the same awful fucking retards doing all the anime dubs too. When Japanese devs actually care enough to translate in house and hire their own real English VAs, the results are usually much better.

Reminder that weebs who swear by subs are mostly autistic and since they don't understand nuance or subtlety, they require characters to always be emoting exaggeratedly and think the louder someone screams, the greater the emotion.

Because Japanese society is pretty much 50% forced conformity, 30% forced emotion, 15% forced societal standards, and only 5% genuine interaction.

The vast majority of Japans society in social circles, economic policy, and interactivity with the rest of the world is so rigid and lifeless that their fantasies reflect the frustration of the people to not be able to do so.

Since most other western societies are very much not like that, it's seen as childish and over-reactionary when we indulge in their media. Manga, anime, games, TV shows, etc.

Since we're talking about games, this means the producers want as wide an audience as it can get, so localization must also reflect those emotions in the same way because "westernu pigu no undersand dere probremsu" and want it as such.

For those deemed fit to be hired for said dubs, it's either toe-the-line or get bent.

japs direct cutscenes to be like stage plays and the voice actors are directed to act like stage actors. dub firms just see cutscenes as cartoons so they force cinematic voice direction which makes everything sound stiff. look at soul reaver. that game is directed like a stage play and the voice actors ham it up accordingly and it works fine.
