I liked it. It was one of those rare cases where the dev just kept adding stuff to the game, and yet it never stopped making sense. Usually games have a pretty low tolerance for bloat. Devs don't want to let go of the game and start ruining it, but Astlibra seems to have a huge tolerance for it. After you finish the entire fucking game and think the adventure is over, you suddenly discover a new mechanic for upgrading weapons, and it all starts again, and you keep playing...
It's like that TV series that could have ended 15 seasons ago, but not only did it not end, it's still good and all the additions it makes make perfect sense. That's insane.
Astlibra is truly a unique game. It's a phenomenon of game design.

I think the progression system is key for this, yes the story steps up constantly but the grinding of everything (weapons, summons, stats, items for shop) leads to you constantly feeling like you're working towards something too. Locking it per chapter works really nice for this since you feel like you achieved something when you fill everything out and then you get even more.

I liked Astlibra so much that I played through the devs Match 3 mobile game called Magicus. It has a ton of progression systems like Astlibra does but it's way grindier. I put over 30 hours into it. I never want to play a match 3 game again.

she was always loyal to Astraea. I think they say she's someone else's follower when she's introduced but she's actually working to help Astraea the whole time. She even says explains before the real fight with her that while you're both on the same side she still needs to fight you to keep her alliance a secret, or something along those lines.

I get that. But I'm asking /who/ she is. In a future where technology reigns supreme, belief in the divine is non-existent and humans literally capture gods in mecha bondage, having a loyal god follower as a mecha pilot, and a high ranked one at that, seems really out of place.

Anulis' dad is fucking dead. His last action was putting her brain in the anubis system so that she can at least be put on some kind of life support system. Salaryman is heavily implied to be the really really fucking distant descendant of the couple from the swamp. Due to him having dreams of a Dog guardian deity who you should be familiar with.

It was cheesy and anime as fuck but I loved the fact that the game gives you three possible, realistic points to stop and just accept things as they are to be happy.
>you can accept Anulis's death and get an early ending where the MC moves on with Shiro and Kuro
>accept that the world is different now and live with Anulis, forgetting about Karon and your friends
>you could AGAIN accept that Anulis is gone after saying your piece to her and defeating Astraea
But the true ending requires you to say fuck that, I want to have my cake and eat it too. And this stubbornness actually saves the world, since otherwise Geas would have destroyed everything.

And then MC's "do or die fuck consequences lmao" attitude in postscript actually did turn out to have consequences, as his rampant abuse of the scales for his anime bullshit was incurring the expected absurd karmic costs, but it was all being shouldered by Astraea, who turns out to genuinely love humanity and is willing to stake her own divine life and existence for it. Even if her "children" only viewed her as a petty god in the end.

It is just the usual Japan "brothers and sisters have deeper relationships here" nonsense rearing its head again. Patently false and only a thing in anime. To be fair, you don't really see it much anymore - Astlibra still has a ton of old anime tropes due to the 16 year dev cycle.

I actually agree with you - it is a good mix of old school charm and more modern game mechanics. It is the kind of thing that is hard to get right, but this game nails it.

Think of Xenoblade 2 - it comes close but goes just a bit too far into trope town. Still a good game, but Astlibra does the same kind of thing better.

Would be the goat if it wasn't for the cringe ass weeb safe horny dialogue. How can you niggas stand that shit? You should be ashamed of yourselves. Games would actually be considered great art if they wasn't held back over the decades with this infantilized anime trope trash. Thank god Clair Obscur cut the gay bullshit and actually thought to not be retarded in this area. It's not that hard to do but I guess weebs yearn for trash.
