very dumb opinion. the reason the world and characters are disjointed is because the game is very heavily focused on its small cast of characters, to the detriment of any world building. whatever "lore" they establish is always secondary to the characters and their quest to be insipid cunts to each other. for instance, in a game like fallout new vegas, there are numerous factions, and some effort was made to have them inhabit the world in a way that establishes their role in it. conversely, there are groups that exist in the last of us' universe, but they only matter in so far as their relationship to the main cast. the fireflies are a means to an end, a plot device for joel and ellie such that they can have a goal to attain. if the fireflies existed in a proper RPG, then they would have a greater presence that goes beyond the player (perhaps you'd see them having skirmishes with other factions; perhaps there'd be some unique quests that would further increase their foothold in the world; etc)

just finished replaying this the other day on my new 5090 PC setup, haven't re-played it since it released like 12 years ago.
it's absolutely stunning on PC, felt like a brand new game. it's always been a favorite of mine but it just felt beautiful playing it now.

playing through LoU2 currently, about 8 hours in. I never played it as I switched to PC and just watched tyler1 play it back in the day.
I'm loving it so far, again another beautiful game but holy shit playing on hard difficulty I am so tense all the time, they made the AI so well.

overall, I think Naughty Dog's engine is just incomparable to anyone else's, it's like every stage in the game is handcrafted and just makes you so immersed. the updated gameplay and movement is insane as well, just the littlest details that I keep seeing blows my mind, and just sets Naughty Dog above many others.

I found the gameplay a bit disappointing, 90% of the game takes place in one very samey environment, there weren't as many memorable gameplay setpieces, and it's just so damn long and poorly paced with so much filler. Also stealth is stupidly strong and is basically 90% of the encounters in the game. Still though, there's not much out there that plays lime TLoU. The core gameplay is pretty damn good, it's just the structure of the game that drags it down. Abby's gameplay is better imo, she gets better guns and equipment and just better combat scenarios.

The story is not terrible, but it definitely feels very contrived, the lesbian romance is just disgusting even if you're not a chud or whatever and they bring it up constantly, but I actually did enjoy Abby a lot more than I thought, aside from looking like a She-Hulk she's actually a pretty good character.

One thing that annoyed me was how TLoU1 really sold the atmosphere and the world and how desolate it was, how a trip across country was an extremely long and arduous journey with very low chance of survival.

And then here comes the sequel where everyone lives hunky dory in big combines with an abundance of food, amenities, a sparkly clean gym with new equipment, killing infected is just totally routine and uneventful, cars work totally fine, and massive multi-thousand mile journeys are just something you do on a whim.
