I realized the OFF remake is coming out in 2 months so decided to delve back in and replay it one last time before we usher into a new era of a ton of new players finding this.
It probably won't become as insufferable as undertale / deltarune but you never know, we live in a strange time when we can't even gatekeep something as esoteric and quirky as this anymore.

Honestly, I’ve had the exact same thought. It’s wild thinking about how OFF used to be this obscure little gem passed around by weird RPGMaker nerds and now it's getting a full-blown remake with localization backing. I’m cautiously optimistic, but yeah, kinda bracing myself for the inevitable wave of “Fans Who Miss the Point” content. A lot of the music uses sampling, like Pepper Steak. This bothered the dev enough that he decided to get a new soundtrack by Toby Fox who offered to do it for free.

People proceeded to discover that Toby ended up adding small Bonetrousle motif's to Dedan's boss theme. Which feels a bit like a Yume Nikki remaster adding Gaster's theme to Uboa.

On top of this the Dopefish reference got replaced with the Annoying Dog. Tobyfags are fast to point out that Toby wouldn't have made that change himself but overlook that the devs would obviously had to have gotten permission from Toby in the first place.

Toby got lucky that all this happened just before Chapter 3 and 4 of Deltarune dropped so it got swept up in the hype for that.

My real problem is gameplay wasn't remade at all. It's same FF ATV slog but now you can't auto-battle. And there is crit system you can't interact with.
I can easily mod in old music, I can't mod in good gameplay revamp. And they did all of this shit in Unity too

They did remade crit system, but it is a nothingburger. You don't have control over crits, they're still random. But you can see when your or enemie's next attack is a crit. Oh and you can see enemy action bar now too.
It's more of a UI rework and not gameplay one. But crits do work now both on damage and heal and on items as well.
And to make gameplay "more difficult" some encounters have more enemies than before and game some new abilities ( they're nothingburger most of the time ).
Literally nothing else. There is no elements type interactions, elemental damage is still useless as it is in no way different to other damage types. Items have now downsides to make you equip different things. You still use your high damage ability and heal hp/cp on demand. That's it, not real gameplay improvements in battle.
But hey, they did completely gut Flesh Maze Tango music puzzle, so battle gameplay is technically better than puzzle gameplay so far.

That's what he claims himself, but no matter how you look at it, the fidelity of the original game is very high: it clearly has some good, refined artistic vision put into it, it has an entire OST composed for it for fuck's sake (albeit it's full of looped tracks and samples, but still). I refuse to believe that a game of such scale could be made for "shit and giggles" only.
Personally, I don't have any strong feelings towards him because:
1. No one is taking away the original game from people.
2. It doesn't have a "special place" in my heart or whatever, although I still think it's a decent game.
3. I don't mean to call Mortis a retard, he may be a glorified schizo, which still leaves his motives bizarre to me.
