Basically this is PS5's equivalent of Series S, except less limiting than Series S, while also with limited PS5 compatibility.

Future PS5 games might be forced to release on handheld, but old games would have to be updated to potentially use lower performance/resolution modes.

That shouldn't be surprising at all. The VR games industry is an extremely poor state and the quality of its video game output is abysmal (most of them are basically worthless shovelware) and by far the most worthwhile content comes from community mods and community ports of "flat" games to VR.

VR on PS is locked to Sony's walled garden and as such all that community content does not exist, you would have to be insane to buy that shit. They've released some limited support for the headset on PC, but I think it's too little, too late. That's why it's easy to expect that some generic streamer handheld which at least works with all the shit on the base PS console would sell more, the addressable market is far larger than walled garden VR crap.

It’s more that they are losing their market to Steam so they are trying to move into handhelds. Hybrids are the default now for consoles as PC has eroded the traditional home console. Japan is really the only market that is left where hybrid will have a significant share (Nintendo will likely struggle in the US this generation) and Japan is handheld country.
