Launching this now for the first time. Never played a FE game before.
What am I in for? Anything to know except play on Ironman mode? I know I'm picking the Red team because she's pretty, that's about it.

-Play on the highest difficulty, it gets too easy otherwise
-You need 5 more Attack Speed to double a foe. Attack Speed = Speed - (Weapon Weight - Strength/5)
-You can unequip your weapon to bait an enemy into attacking you without speed loss from heavy weapons
-It's almost never worth it to Rest or do a Seminar. If you're going to Explore, make sure you feed your students for Tutoring
-Prioritize upgrading statues when you're able to. You want the double Class EXP perk
-Master your Basic class before moving onto an Intermediate class. Positionals are good. Mage and Brigand both give really good skills for maxing them out
-It doesn't cost any Activity Points to go fishing. You can buy bait from some guys by the merchant shops after a few chapters
-Early game, you're going to want to cook for temporary stat gains. On the highest difficulty, those stats go a long way
-You can recruit almost anyone to any house. If you're going with the Black Eagles, you cannot recruit Hilda, Catherine, or Dedue. Get a support rank with that person to make it easier to recruit them (recruiting is based on having a high stat or weapon level in something they're asking for, Support Levels decrease the amount needed)
-Have fun :^)

If you do play on hardest difficulty know that every single fire emblem game is always hardest at the beginning and a joke by the end. This applies to every difficulty, but is most noticeable on the hardest difficulty. The first 5 encounters are always the hardest. The last 5 are free wins.

Three Houses and Engage at least had a mid game difficulty ramp-up, but ultimately yeah the last 5 ended up being easy

Three Houses is arguably worse in that due to having no crutch character.

Though, at least, narratively it does kind of make sense. Entire game is you playing a teacher and trying to turn these kids into wargods.

Every chapter, characters you haven't recruited will level up and sometimes change their class.
Some characters are much stronger when recruited during certain chapters; for example Ingrid receives a gargantuan +4 Def and +4 Res when she autolevels from level 9 to 11
It's often worth it to not recruit characters until a certain point so their starting stats are better than if you trained them up yourself.

If you are going to do this, I would honestly recommend you commit to it. If the MC dies, the game is over and you have to restart from the beginning. At least, that's how it tends to work for me.

Here's some stuff the game never properly explains
>Recruiting characters to your class is not dependant only on the stats they ask from you, but also on supports. In other words, building support points between Byleth and out of house characters speeds up recruitment a bunch.
>The garden is far more convoluted than the game makes it seem, and it can give out statboosters+gifts that are useful for easily maxing out motivation and stats. I suggest looking up some basic online explanation for it and to experiment.
>Every character has a unique spellist, so some characters are simply better at magic than others due to what they can cast.
>The game tries really hard to associate Hero Relics to their corresponding crest user, but there's nothing stopping you from giving it to any other character other than losing out on a combat art and/or getting a lower bonus effect from them. Even non-crest characters can use them well as long as you keep the 10hp penalty in mind when using this kind of equipment with them.
>Growth rates, aka the chance that a character improves in certain stats each level up, are both preset for characters and modified further by the class they're in.

Yes, but you only get limited amount of rewinds. You probably want to think carefully about when to use them. And yes, you could argue it makes Ironman runs less Ironman. But, frankly, I just view it as a way to not have your entire campaign fucked up by a simple misclicks like in other games.

>MC dying does sound brutal though depending on how long a campaign is
I would say it's about as long as an X-Com campaign(Not sure if that's a good reference). Probably slightly longer, though nowhere near as long as a Long War campaign. I'll freely admit that Three Houses is probably one of the less good games to do a hardcore Ironman run like this because of some quirks with the structure. With that said though, one advantage is that the MC is actually really freaking strong. Depending on the difficulty, really all you need is the MC to be strong enough and you can probably do reasonably well unless pretty much everybody else dies. It helps that, at least in Three Houses, you can use the rewind feature in case the enemy just gets a lucky crit on them.

Most people tend to just reload the game when they lose an character. I would argue Ironman, especially for your first run, is more fun but it's a acquired taste. You could also reload if the MC dies but not if minor characters die, it's really up to you. It never worked for me, but I'm also badshit crazy.

>It helps that, at least in Three Houses, you can use the rewind feature in case the enemy just gets a lucky crit on them.
That's pretty much what I figured. Not X-com style where you get molested and in turn flip your desk over.

I might consider reloading like you said if the MC dies 20 hours in. But according to other posters in the thread by that time I'll be really strong and less likely to get touched anyway. But other than the MC I consider everyone a target.

>But according to other posters in the thread by that time I'll be really strong and less likely to get touched anyway.
It probably depends on what difficulty you are playing at. Granted, I'm pretty sure even on higher difficulties it's very unlikely he'll get one shot. As long as you don't put him on the front line and expect him to fight off the entire enemy army you should PROBABLY be fine. Even crits are survivable as long as you are aware of them.

Main, or lord as they are typically called, characters in Fire emblem games are typically all over the place. Ranging from insanely strong to very weak. The obvious advantage to having a strong lord is that the unit you have to deploy can generally hold his own and that if you build him properly he can probably solo the end game. The main downside is that you have to balance your desire to use this strong unit vs your desire to not restart the entire game (Which is why I tend to be rather strict about Ironman runs personally, as otherwise I tend to just massively overuse the lord). Byleth is honestly pretty comfortable in that regard, specially combined with the rewind feature. Doing both hardcore and higher difficulty though does seem pretty unwise, but it's really up to you. Fire Emblem games tend to be kind of weird when it comes to difficulty.

This 4chan post discusses the varying strength of "lord" characters in Fire Emblem games, noting that while a strong lord can potentially solo the endgame, over-relying on them on higher difficulties or during an "Ironman" run (where losing a unit means they're gone forever) can be risky, though features like Byleth's "rewind" ability can mitigate this.

Just go into it blind and have fun. Pick any house/route you want to, there's no "right" choice.
Btw there are some SERIOUS schizos here so take everything with a grain of salt. The routes all diverge pretty seriously and autismos like to fight over which route is "right" even though they're pretty clearly written to make the route you chose look better than the ones you didn't for each route.

>What am I in for?
An extremely poorly designed game, in my opinion. I had never played anything in the series before, except the old games for a few minutes on emulators.
The problem with FE 3 houses is the part between battles. All of that could have been easily replaced by a quick 2D interface where you immediately choose what you want to do between battles, but apparently that has no appeal to modern players, so you have to walk around like an idiot in those poorly made environments with low-quality assets and textures, wasting time on stupid tasks.

You can recruit units from other teams
In fact, the game is generous enough with your time that if you min-max, you can recruit almost everyone.

I recommend not doing this. there's content in the second half of the game that you only see if you leave students unrecruited. You can either recruit or not recruit staff, but I strongly recommend only recruiting 1-2 students from other houses on your first playthrough for the best experience
