I dropped Rebirth after about 20 hours. I’ve platinumed SB. Have beaten boss rush on every difficulty. Have beaten Hard difficulty on a fresh NG save. If you look at Rebirth in a vacuum and JUST in terms of the development cost for that singular project, they probably turned a small profit, yeah.

But if you consider the entirety of the money they spent on remaking VII as a whole... then no, they're still recouping those losses. Remember that they ANNOUNCED development for Remake in fucking 2014. They had actually been working on the remake since BEFORE the launch of the PS4. And then at some point they actually OUTSOURCED development of the game to fucking CyberConnect2, and then when they saw the state of the game towards the end of the project deadline... they literally took the project back inhouse and had to restart development.

SquareEnix literally burned hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of developing Remake for about 15+ years.
