I’m gonna start this game tonight. How’s the combat compared to past games? I assume the farming stuff will be a lot of the same, but I wanted more interesting combat. I never played 5, so I don’t know if that game made any real strides in adding complexity or enhancing the feel of it.

Mechanically, it's pretty much the same as the DS version.
Graphically, it has higher resolution backgrounds and textures. Models are now also Bravely Default style cute chibi pudgy dolls instead of the blocky yet charming monstrosities they were in the DS version.

Turnips are great from the start because the drum makes any 3 day or less crop harvestable every day.
Rice has very high yields (~29 per harvest) but requires a special 2x2 plot that needs a water tile next to it. Still, it's very efficient and if you really wanted to probably manage with villager farmers.
Honey is completely automated and all you have to do is build barns and kidnap bees and you'll print money forever with no upkeep required.

the game will give you a pop up that tells you the gods will be temporarily unavailable at that point of the story. make sure you progress far enough to make them available again if you want to invite someone to the fireworks festival or else it will completely bug out (if you don't care about inviting anyone then it doesn't matter)

It's less about rushing the story and more about the timing of certain events, for me it was Tanabata that got messed up instead of the fireworks festival

Tanabata, the first actual festival in the game happens on the 7th Summer, and it and the Fireworks one on 20th Summer which needs the Gods present to happen, can get fucked if you reach a certain point of the story which takes the Gods away from the village for a period of time, and don't complete that section before the day of the festival comes

The game warns you when you're about to reach that point, so you either have the option of delaying story progress until the day of the festival least you be forced to wait until the next year to experience it, or charging full speed ahead and completing the rest of the story so that it stops being an issue
