The water temple is good, there's nothing wrong with a little difficulty spike now and then, makes the game more memorable. If Ocarina of Time's water temple was easier it would also be more forgotten

The constant boot swapping was only half the problem, the other problem was the stupid water-level swapping being annoyingly tedious and in the original N64 version, the switches had no labels on them so you just had to activate one, look what it did, and then try to remember that specific switch does that specific water level.

Aonuma didn't create Zelda you retard.
He wasn't involved at all with the first four games and was only one of many many devs on the fifth.
The fact that he gained absolute control over the franchise is mind-boggling and probably due to yakuza connections.

Why did the temple look like that though?

Every other temple has a reason: Forest temple is an abandoned mansion, Fire temple used to be some sort of foundry, Shadow temple was some fucked up torture chamber for hyrule's enemies, and Spirit temple was straight up an actual temple built to worship some goddess

But the Water temple? Why does it look like that? What is it supposed to even be?

I played ocarina for the first time last year. Also played Majora's Mask (Favorite game of series), Twilight Princess, 40 hours of Breath of the Wild and Wind Waker.

Water Temple is easily the best dungeon. I will admit I played the PC ship port which allowed me to assign dpad to items which made it very enjoyable.
But design, progression and puzzle wise it is easily the best one lads.

Maybe it's just a temple anon. Why does everything need to fit your cool fan theory? Maybe it's okay that some of them are arbitrarily "some other thing" and some of them are "actual temples" and some of them are something else.

It always felt to me like some sort of water reclamation plant, but none of the creatures nor the boss mesh with that idea. Then again you also have weird shit like the fire scarecrows at the fire temple, so I just think most of the time they just threw a bunch of shit at the wall

It is, and the 3DS fixed it.
Only other thing I would do is get rid of needing to use Zelda's Lullaby to activate the water level change, and relegate that to a switch instead.

Itโ€™s weird, I have a zoomer brain that played OoT on 3DS for the first time back when I was 12 or 13 and I had no issues with the water temple at all. Maybe a lot of people just struggled because it was their first 3D Zelda?

>It IS an objective fact
Anon by that metric any time any creator of anything says it was good criticism otherwise is invalidated.
Before you irony post a Yes. consider that means the latest mainstream consumer trash you despise falls under the same category considering how many interviews have the staff all unanimously agree they did their best work on this installment same as the last and the next.

Nah. Sometimes the creator has more insight into things the audience doesn't, which makes the latter less equipped to judge the former, sure, but sometimes the familiarity a creator has means they lack the experience of audience novelty and are less capable of judging objectively from that stance.

there was a quality of life update for the 3DS version. in the original N64 version, you could only equip and remove the boots by accessing the pause menu, and it couldn't be bound to an item button, so players would have had to pause and unpause the game dozens of times more than necessary throughout the dungeon.
thematically it's a beautiful dungeon and has an interesting water level control mechanic, but there weren't any other location in the entire game which required so many pauses and unpauses.
