>>712864042>Sadly anime collecting isn't a serious hobby for most people,Outside of Lain becoming a meme and prices on that set skyrocketing in the past few years, you're mostly correct.
However, as anime sinks into the remake/retread trend the same as every other form of media, there's going to be more Netflix Evangelion-style updates where they remove the original dub (however you might feel about that) and change the fucking subtitles. And that'll just be the shows that reached the highest echelon of popularity.
Trigun hasn't been released on Bluray (outside of Japan, but I'm only assuming that, I've never checked) and the DVD box set, while out of print, is still pretty cheap--but that won't last forever.
The original release of FLCL on bluray has jumped up in price significantly, but you can get the shitty "FLCL - Season 1" version for a normal price, but that branding sucks ass and all the newer "seasons" of FLCL are total trash.
Those are just examples I've encountered directly. If you're at all into collecting anime you're probably near to or over 30 and most of what you want is out of print and the licensing rights have been in limbo since the late 00s and going to have to rely on out-of-print DVDs primarily.
You could always just go digital only, but I've always preferred physical.
