Except I have a precedent to point to, The Super Mario Bros Movie, which played it safe, exactly as I said, and went for broad audience appeal, sticking to a simple animated film formula with popular actors, and a faithful adherence to the Mario video games. All of this with a reliable animation studio that have regularly produced successful animated films on a medium budget, and were happy to kowtow to Nintendo's requirements.

The Legend of Zelda will be the same, with the difference being it's live action and thus they can't just cast major actor names for every character, they'll have to at least be able to play them physically. Hence the look for young actors and actresses for Link and Zelda. Likely they'll cast some name actors for supporting roles. I would not expect the same semi-irrelevant tone typical in post-Shrek animated films that was present in Super Mario Bros either, Legend of Zelda is a more "prestigious" series and as such will get played as more straight fantasy.

They probably want to broaden their horizons with older target demographics that hit the teen-to-adult movie market (which is kind of empty right now,) and Zelda's perfect for that.
