What made the Souls genre so prolific that it now defines gaming after just 13 years since its first release?
We have never seen a similar breakthrough and paradigm shift in the medium ever since

This, soulslike is a idiot proof blueprint anyone can copy.

People thought BotW would get a bunch of copycats as well, it didn't get nearly as many because its significantly harder to make

10/10 games but also lets everyone simulate their childhood talking about games on the playground and collating small bits of info into a larger picture, but in the digital internet age.
People talk about these games like they talked about ff3 on the playground, sharing tips and secrets they think only they know.

shame they all fell for the parryslop meme ever since Sekiro
spacing is no longer an important part of play, you don't have to worry about hitboxes or much of anything when the best method at all times is to either sit there or actively move into the enemy hitboxes and parry
it turns action games into nothing more than rote memorization. once you learn the timing of the parries there's no more skill required

Demons was so good everyone wanted to make a clone.

90's id games define games to this day. Doom and Quake is in everything still

Why can't anyone else seem to do it right then?

White people can't design action games. They can only copy what superior Japanese game designers have done.

It's super easy to make like >>712854430 says.
In other games you have to actually design interesting boss fights, in soul slop games you just add an i-frame button which will be the solution to all the bosses attacks.

Souls combat is just a translation of fundamental fighting game concepts which have been around since Street Fighter 2, the Japanese are just more familiar with fighting games so they do a better job of it

In that case, why can't they create something I like from that blueprint? I liked the Fromsoft games well enough. What are they doing with that blueprint that others aren't?

>What made the Souls genre so prolific
Prolific just means lots of sequels were released.

I want more slows Souls like DeS/DaS. Just something that I master in a few hours and play to relax.

Part of it was dark souls really hit it big right when big name games were getting so easy in the name of accessibility that even normies were starting to be annoyed by it.

Name at least 3 interesting boss fights of the last four years

>Well-received across the board
>Almost uniformly sell exceptionally well compared to the resources used to make them
>Great content mills for influencers because people want to see high-skill players like Ongbal utterly trash bosses just as much as they want to see shitters getting filtered and crying
>Long-term franchise that can reuse resources and assets from its full history at will, with things that date back to Demon's Souls still showing up to this day
>Gameplay is easy to understand, takes effort to master, and is highly rewarding at high level play
The industry would be retarded to not want their own equivalent to this.

Reminder that Dark Souls 1 had variable swing speeds depending on what weapon you were using within the same weapon type and they just never brought that back.

this webm encapsulates my problem with nu souls and it's clones, it's all the same boss fight, you're just waiting for this amalgamation designed enemy to flail around his indescribable shit so you can press defense then attack, and repeat for the whole game; combat was definitely not the top priority of why i liked souls in the first place; when i started with ds1 getting stuck and finding my way out of the world was, every step of progress felt rewarding, then i got too good at the game and already had the world figured out in my head, it's never going to be the same replaying it and fromsoftware refuses to make a game like it again, and then as always since the dawn of gaming there's the crappy clones that completely miss the point

There is a reason that people are starting to say that the early souls games had dungeon crawl level design, because that's what made them stand out.
