64's story gameplay is fun, the multiplayer is like the natural evolution of the classic gameplay and is almost purely an improvement, Generations kept it going for better or worse, and then if memory serves, they made this horrible gritty bomberman reboot game on the Xbox(Bomberman Act Zero) that probably did irreversible damage to the franchise. I recall the Bomberman IP falling off the earth after that game was made, and we only got constant reboots of the classic style since.

Then Bomberman had some play during the 5th and 6th gens where gaming culture accepts more series as important across systems but died during the 7th gen.
And also despite being beloved nobody cared about the OG Game Boy outside of Pokémon and Wario getting introduced.
All along the way MegaMan kept doing more and more releases across everything and just had a higher saturation of new and varied content overall.

No it's fucking not. I've lived in Japan for 7 years and the only time you ever used to see Bombergirl cabs is at the really hardcore arcades. They aren't even at these arcades anymore. I haven't seen a Bombergirl cab in at least 6 months. Gundam Xtreme Vs, crane games, and photo booths are the only thing keeping arcades afloat.

This carried over to the 5th gen wherein the PS1 was both the normie console and valued for its indvidual series and not for the system itself, and nobody bought the Saturn.
This meant that Nintendo fans who again are more likely to be Posters got to dominate the conversation online for a decade basically creating the modern narrative around gaming.
Its that croc vs banjo image, a shit ton of people played croc, but most moved on from video games during their teens and didn't become posters, kids who played Banjo did.
Bomberman's issue was that beyond the two NES games and 64 among the Bomberman community and so didn't get to cement itself as meanignful.

One other thing no one likes to consider is that Bomberman has an infinitely high skill ceiling and is meant for competitive play, and while deceptively simple, Bomberman asks quite a bit of players in terms of full-board awareness and tracking lots of changing variables across the span of short 3-minute bouts.
It unironically filters retards because you can't break through beginner level play unless you have an IQ high enough to process the shit Bomberman demands.
Untrained eyes look at the game and just assume it's a simple "stay out of the fire" game when in reality Bomberman is an extremely accelerated strategy game with discrete early/mid/endgame phases, clear lines between stalemates and checkmates, clear distinctions between players of different skill levels, and hard checks on whether your skill is enough to survive at all. Yet it can still be played enjoyably as a party game much like Smash Bros due to the ostensible simplicity of its base mechanics.
Unfortunately a real metagame rarely has time to develop around any given Bomberman title because of high turnover (people getting filtered), not enough high-level players or ways to train high-level play, and a multitude of titles with no real unity between them. Power Bomberman is as close as we've gotten so far, but it would take Konami having some shred of respect for both the series and the players in order for an "official" Bomberman game to become a viable central hub where players can actually find decent matches and sharpen each other as steel unto steel.

As someone that's replayed a few classic Bomberman games recently, I'd honestly say the baseline combat's just too old, and I hate to say it, but it needs to be modernized.
The only people left who play Bomberman games are the people who played them originally, the series only "survives" on nostalgia alone.
Not modernized in a bad way, I just mean shit like converting the game into a more action-based platformer, maybe in the style of a slower Sonic. IIRC the N64 game played like this?
Put emphasis on explosions, have every boss get nuked after they're beaten or something.

I dunno, I'm not even sure if Bomberman CAN be "fixed" outside of removing the grids and the plus-shaped explosions, those two are definitely non-negotiable, they'd have to go.
It's actually a little funny, the plus-shaped explosions are a key part of the strategic gameplay in the franchise, but they're a big part of what makes the franchise into normalfag repellant. The other part is how goofy the Bomber-people race looks, though they've tried to fix that via Act Zero and Bombergirls, so IDFK.
