I love making themed teams. This is the rain team I just beat Hoenn with in pokemmo. All my pokemon were arounf 10 levels below the elite 4's pokemon so it was fun and felt more strategic than just going first and 1 shotting the enemy every turn. I plan to make a team of all frog pokemon and a team of all mice/rodent pokemon too for fun to beat the other regions.

HMs just shouldn’t have been battle moves but special abilities your Pokemon could do in the world based on type or egg group. So long as you had a water type in your party/other Pokemon who could use surf, you could traverse over water. So long as you had a grass type or a Pokemon with claws you could use cut. Etc. There might still be SOME HM slavery, but it would be drastically reduced. Fly would probably be the only HM slave that still exists that would force players into a corner on getting a flying type. The main problem was those HMs taking up limited move slots. But being able to get special access to areas based on your team comp is neat.

Now that HM slaves are gone, I can replace them in my party with two Pokémon that do the exact same thing as my overleveled starter. But now I'll be more likely to have super-effective STAB all the time, even if it's about as effective as spamming Flamethrower and Fire Blast on everything with my level 83 Charizard and requires more time and effort to switch and raise them. They can now replace all HM obstacles with NPCs who block you arbitrarily until they don't and are definitely not obnoxious.

Luck fishing is a strategy that some people go for. For example I never use any moves without a base 100% hit chance because I am not a fan of variance. Pokémon tournaments have far more rounds in the Swiss portion of their tournaments compared to chess, so the luck curve tends to flatten and make those that rely on luck instead of skill not even make it to the bracket portion of the tournament
