why can't we get games like the PS2 era again? These games reportedly only cost 8-10 million to make.

because the marketing division says the game must have the most photorealistic graphics at any cost for the sake of advertisement.

I have to wonder if things like the care for advanced, demanding graphics and all that act as a hinderance, and don't really help things. There are games with realistic and high end graphics that looks great and have soul but just how many of them really are all that great?

You mean that looks like this? people wouldn't buy it. it would still take good money to make this. then what can you charge for it? Like 30 bucks? would people pay that for a ps2 level game. idk if it makes business sense for an indie company to do this.

Because women are the largest group of consumers these days. And they only want things that are extremely expensive - in games that means extremely expensive "interactive tv show" style games.

Alan Wake 2 looks fantastic. Even medium settings without HDR I was consistently impressed with the environments.
