Well, steam deck is nearly $200 cheaper and can run almost every single modern game right now.
Switch 2 only has Mario Kart so right now youd be an idiot to get a switch 2 if its between the two. Nintendo is going to have to release a hell of a lot of bangers for that price to be justified.
Steam deck plays ps4 games better then a ps4 btw so saying switch 2 is a portable ps4 is stupid

It will be as far as hardware is concerned. Mainly because that hardware is already outdated. But don't expect any new console from nintendo anytime soon. I wouldnt even expect an oled model any time soon. The switch 2 is going to hold back gaming for another 8 years, so youre good to buy one now if you want.

The deck is pretty quickly falling behind in specs these days especially with newer games tending to be poorly optimized and compressed messes, however I see zero point in owning a switch 2 right now due to no games, not actually owning your physical games, and games being $80 or more. If they course correct like they did for the DS, maybe.

So I guess your choices are a piece of hardware that's now rapidly falling behind the curve or overpriced with no games.

It's a way harder choice than it should be, the Switch 2 will get Nintendo exclusives for 6 or 7 years which is good but the Deck's back catalog is infinitely better. If I had to choose one right now, I might go with the Deck just because I like old games more than new ones and I prefer indie games and most of those will run on the Deck and PC does have some exclusive ones.

If it was a Deck 2, it'd be a no brainer.

The VR headset is ARM, but the base station machine that runs the games is an AMD64 desktop. Maybe they'll change that before releasing the final headset, but that would likely put it further into the future.
Linux ARM's advantages over Linux AMD64 are less significant than Linux ARM vs NT AMD64. Especially when adding in an AMD64 hardware emulator for game compatibility.

Nobody even makes Intel x86 hardware anymore, at least not for the consumer market. It is all AMD64 and ARM with maybe a few RiscV devices. Even Intel only produces AMD64 hardware under license from AMD.

Games like Cyberpunk will run better on your PC than the S2 and the deck. If you want to play outside them it would be the S2, but that's only for now. We don't know how long they'll be interested in making ports. And if we don't have a R4R, it means you won't have all the good stuff on the S2. It's better to give it time instead of doing something stupid.

The legacy x86 compatibility of AMD64 matters, especially for PC gaming, but it is important to not lose sight of how much better AMD64 is than legacy Intel hardware or Intel's knock-off modern chips.

Wouldn't shock me if Valve switched to ARM for the Deck 2. It's clear they care a lot about low power requirements since they are one of the only ones making a 15W handheld. And they said several times they want Deck 2 to be a significant bump on power. Basically they want their cake and eat it too. Not sure AMD can make something like that. The thing pushing Valve to AMD might be FSR5 and frame gen which is very much needed for a next gen handheld

It is still an open question which happens faster, AMD64 continuing to slim down, or ARM gaining ground fast enough to be competitive per watt when running emulated AMD64 software.
At the moment, given the state of the drivers we will probably see users installing Linux based Gaming OSes on Nvidia's new mini ARM Linux workstation system before we see any kind of ARM Linux handheld hardware from AMD.

If the rumors Microsoft's ARM handheld Xbox is dead, that might be it for that. ARM still only really makes sense for running games compiled for it. Even then, the Switch and the Deck LCD are close in battery life.

Game Streaming makes tolerable to play those crazy games like Street Fighter 6, Forza Horizon or Doom that push 50gb patches every couple of weeks.

I'm still waiting on the Switch to acquire the entire libraries of the NES, SNEs, N64, 3DS, gamecube, WiiU and many others. Not to mention the virtual consoles that people bought games on. People have bought games on steam from 15 years ago and they can still play them to this day.

Switch 2

Comes with a dock
Much lighter
Much more comfortable to hold in your hands
Better regular screen (there probably will be an OLED Switch 2 down the line but not now since it'd like be like 600 bucks)
1080p screen
Plays some older games on increased framerate and resolution. (number of games to increase down the line)
Games actually work out of the box and don't need any more tinkering to run at an acceptable level because most of the time the "Steam Deck preset" is bullshit that barely runs
Will have longer term support
Access to games you may not have access to (or just don't emulate all that well), even if you have a powerful desktop PC

If you are a desktop PC owner a Steam Deck is rather redundant and works to play your already existing PC games on the go. Some of them at least.
Switch 2 heavily expands the range of games you can play.

Additionally, contrary to popular belief the Steam Deck doesn't emulate Switch 1 games as well as people online claim. They are playable sure, but you often get extreme slowdowns. As is the nature of emulation. While technically the Switch 2 also "emulates" the Switch 1, it does so with a proper translation layer ala Wine or Proton which is on another level and has minimal performance sacrifices. So it only translates the commands between hardware and software. But an emulator also emulates and hence translates the hardware itself.
