Can someone explain to me what the appeal of this game is? It looks like a forgiving boring platformer, but maybe it was good for its time? Is it worth playing?

It was good for its time. Like the American Cave Story except way less depth and way more pretention.

It was a fun little puzzle platformer in 2008 when it came out. There weren't really any indie games at the time, outside of Cave Story and some Flash stuff like Castle Crashers, that were competently made at all, so it stood out.
It's got some jank from the time and the "secrets" are all kinda stupid, one of them has you wait in one spot for I think 8 hours or so until a very slow moving platform appears and lets you reach the secret. Pick it up on sale, definitely don't pay full price for the remastered edition or whatever, or just pirate it.

Back in like 2008, indie games were not really held in high regard or expected to be good. Cave Story being the ridiculously high bar in terms of quality. And other indie games were never on that quality. So something competent actually being kinda 'decent' for 9 bucks at the time was pretty cool.
